: 05 vs 06
Hollywood D-Max 08-30-2005, 02:49 AM Is it really worth trading in a brand new 2005 LLY for a 2006 LBZ, I got 7,000 miles on my 05 and I am getting 15.5 mpg, I guess my overall question is will I see an overwelming difference in both performance and gas mileage?

From what I have read and researched, with the 6-speed Allison, the final drive is 0.61:1 which reduces the rpm's @ 60mph 250. At highway cruising, I'd have to say you will see a decent mpg increase. However, on the other hand, the LBZ has more power, somewhat new injectors, and other changes that make this a very hard question to answer. One thing for sure, the LBZ hauls like no other Diesel. According to a test drive on pickuptruck.com, it's not even close, that's how much better the LBZ is than the Cummins and Power Stroke.
Since you already have a very nice truck, IMHO, I'd wait it out, until others have the LBZ, and see what they get for mpg, and then compare with yours, and what you want to make the trade sustainable.
Reineke 08-30-2005, 03:50 AM I also agree to waiting it out. You can put on some 265 or 285 tires to drop the RPM's if you are looking at that. There are plenty of performance upgrades to be had to clear the difference between the LLY and LBZ and it will be awhile before the LBZ has performance upgrades available.
Sea Wizard 08-30-2005, 09:28 AM SO I wonder if you do a tranny upgrade & performance upgrade on a 05, if that would compare to an LBZ?
If it does what's the sense in purchasing an 06?
O'Neall 08-30-2005, 12:15 PM You'll take a BIG hit on trade by trading in that new of a truck!
Wait it out... drive your LLY and enjoy it. Then in 07 when the redesigned trucks come out consider trading in for one of them (if you like them)... that's what I'd do anyway.
Besides in a couple of years they'll probably have another version of the Dmax to replace the LBZ. Ford and Dodge will have to up the ante to stay in the game, so no doubt they'll crank up the power on their diesels. Then GM will have to do the same. The diesel market has been crazy the last few years... I wouldn't expect any manufacture's diesel engine to stay static for more than a year or two at this rate.
Something to consider at least.:ro)

+1. The '07s do look pretty :cool2: though. :)
trout74 08-30-2005, 01:41 PM and where could we see these 07's you speak of?
thanks
ChevyRacing48 08-30-2005, 03:30 PM I think the GMT-900 HD's wont be out until MY 2008.
RVerFulltime 08-31-2005, 01:42 AM I saw a 2005 model next to a 2006 model at the dealership and I noticed the transmission cooler for the Allison was about twice the size. Maybe the entire cooling system is improved on the 2006.

The last I read on gminsidenews was that production was bumped up to January of 06 to start building the new lines. There is supposed to be a press release and the unveiling of the new models in the next month. Thats only what I've read.

$300-$800 box/programmer = more hp/tq than LBZ, and you dont loose any trade in value....tranny work will even it out a bit and you have to deal with warranty conflicts...

That's correct, but that is for the 1500's. The HD's seem to be coming out a year later. But GM has been focusing on getting the GMT-900's out the door quicker, so we may see them sooner.
gardnerteam 10-16-2005, 02:35 PM Unless you are a buy new every year, and have a place you can write off tax advantages up the wazoo, only an idiot would buy a 06 over a 05. My 05 was a very nice vehicle (as was my 02), and with only 30K on it there was no need to sell it. Except now that I collect social security I needed extra writeoffs, so it made sense to me. Trade up every two to three years is your best bet - and selling your own mint vehicle is always your best bet. Timing is everything. But if your old, senile, don't care about money (can't believe I said that), and can't spend all you've earned while working hard all your life, what the heck. This is America, where if you plan, work hard, save and invest 80% of your income in your first 10 income producting years, and then do it again, go ahead - spend. My spending is always someone else's earnings. Dumb politicians forget that!
