hey guys how much hp does it take to start in 3rd gear and run 4th gear sled pulling ? this may have already been discussed but curiosity has gotten me. I run around 650rwhp and ocassionaly hit 4th gear but it would seem easier starting in 3rd gear

I've got a buddy that starts in third and stays in third but he's only running around 550hp. I start in third and shift to fourth with my truck. I have slightly over 650 hp and it does fine.

I would say it probably depends on your tires. Size and bite are big considerations....... track conditions are also a factor.

This would be a good question for Mark. I think he's a big advocate of 3rd gear starts but i could be wrong.

I would like to know this also, I pulled for the first time last weekend and went for a 3rd gear start but dont think my truck ever shifted out of 2nd ( I will shift manually next time) I never did fall off on power, but didnt have the speed I needed at the end.

I would say start in second and let it shift to third and with lockup of convertor should give you plenty of speed.

What does the third gear start do to ones transmission? I could be wrong but it seems like it would not be a good thing.

the gear ratio you're running has more to do with it than horsepower
