Hey guys, anybody have the part number for the air dam that would fit my 2004 GMC 3500 4x4 SRW? I saw 2 or 3 different numbers on a search.

I have all the part numbers but haven't verified on the GMC that it has tabs to mount the dam, so I haven't posted. Before buying check to see if you have the tabs.

3" GMC is 10386201

Will this dam help with cooling? Is it part of the stack sealing mods?

I just purchased an air dam extension #10386198 for my 2003. To make it work, I also had to update my air dam to one supplied with 2005 trucks.

Every thing fits correctly now.

I bought the 10386201 air dam for my 04.5 GMC 4w4 and it didn't fit. I had to make tabs to make it fit. Not a very good solution.

What color is it??? The piece that it will attach to on my 05 chevy is gray.

The air dam is black. The piece you are talking about is the lower bumper cover. My cover is the same color as my truck. This is the piece the air dam attaches to and mine has no tabs.

I bought the same one. My question is if the angle is correct when bolted on this bumper? Otherwise it may not perform correctly. It in no way fits this 2004 HD bumper, so is there another part number that anyone has tried? Thanks guys, just trying to do it right before drilling holes.

It is my understanding that the dam which is being purchased DOES NOT bolt onto the bumper, but rather to the support crossbar under the Stack. Please somebody correct me if I am wrong on this one.

On my 05 Chevy, I have the chrome bumper, then below this is a grey plastic bumper trim that goes along the entire length of the bumper (this is what the fog lamps and towing hooks peek through). The air dam has clips that line up with bumps on this grey plastic piece. At the end of the grey plastic piece are two holes that line up with some 6mm nuts on the air dam. You'll need to scare up some 6mm bolts and a couple of washers, and bolt the ends of the air dam to the grey plastic piece.

Hope this helps,

Joseph

colnago, how much did you pay for your dam ?

I paid $30.03 at my local Chevy dealer, including sales tax. I could have bought it cheaper from gmpartsdirect.com, but after shipping, the price was about the same. I think the GM air dam is more expensive, by a buck or two, but I don't know what is different between the Chevy and GM versions.

By the way, I bought the 3" air dam, even though I don't have a 4x4. I figured it didn't make sense getting the smaller one.

My part below the bumper has no holes at all. And the dam does not fit well.

The 10386201 appears to be for the 05 GMC Sierras. The 04.5 is different. I'll verify in the next hr.

Good tip. Buy them from the dealer. You can't easily return anything to GMPartsdirect.

Confirmed. 10386201 fits on a late 05 GMC Sierra 2500HD. This has a horzontal flange on the bottom of the body-colored lower bumper apron with about a dozen horz tabs that snap into the slots of PN 10386201. There are two holes in the apron on either end that require a M6x1 - 15mm long countersunk head bolt to attach.

On the early 2004.5's the apron ends vertically. It looks like it was cut off to remove the tabs and horz flange? Odd. It appears there would not be a simple way of putting a lower dam on it. There does not appear to be any interface features like snaps or holes in it. The only "simple" fix would be getting an 05 bumper apron, then painting it. $$$

Thank You as I am now clear on the air dam part number. Can you tell me the quanity and part numbers for the proper fasteners , or is it obvious when ordering from the dealer?

If you have 04.5-05 Sierra, first look under your truck. If you have tabs and two holes in your lower apron, then get the part. If not, you will have to improvise. Remember, GM is famous for changing parts during production runs, you might have tabs on a late 04.5, and you might not on a early 05. I checked an early 04.5 3500SRW and a late 05 2500HD.

I bought the 2 bolts at the hardware store. 6mm dia, 1.0mm thread pitch, 90 deg countersunk head, 15mm thread length.

Great job McRat, thanks. I can still bolt up the 10386201, but it may not be effective. Anyone else installed this part number on an 04' GMC?

As I said I made clips that run on the inside of the lower valance made of some scrap 22 gauge aluminum. They are held in place by plastic push pins that go through holes I drilled through the plastic. the clips are similar to the clips which hold the splash sheild inside the fender. I inserted a bolt on the end in a hole I drilled. I then took the clips off again and painted them white with the new krylon fusion plastic paint. I used the white which is the same color as the truck. an inexpensive way of dealing with the no fit problem

Anyone thinks the dam makes a cooling difference on the GM?

KB, not much to see just the painted tabs on the outside. The aluminum is on the inside of the plastic valance and the push tabs hold it. To get good pics I will see if I can get it on the lift in the next day or two. The tabs rap through the slots in the air dam and are crimped over to hold the air dam tight. I just returned from a 900 mile trip to the DC area. With the nose shroud, sealing the stack and the slots I made in the splash sheild it is hard to say if the dam made a diffrence. I think we proved that it does with the Fingers air dam though. I think it is a culmulitve effort, all the little things add up. The trip to DC was pulling a lite little enclosed trailer so the ECT never went over 198. I looked at my buddys 04 6.0 2500hd and noticed that it has the nose shroud, stack sealing and all air holes blocked with factory oem componants. They just never put them in the Dmax. GM didn't finish building the truck they left off all the trim for the cooling system/stack.

Thanks McRat! I know I have the little holes in the apron. One on each side directly in front of the tire. I will slide underneath and explore for the other tabs. Thanks again.

Just wondering if anyone has tried a different dam than the 10386201 on a 2004 truck. That part # is for a 2005. It will work on an 04', but requires removing the vertical lip. This may change the angle and air deflection.

dmacy:

I have a chevy, I know it is not the same as for your GMC. However, I had the same problem, the air dam extension I purchased would not bolt up to my 2003 lower gray pumper cover (air dam) which has the fog lights and tow hook opennings because the stock 2003 air dam was not designed for the air dam extension.

I had my parts man look up the part number for a 2003 and 2005 Chevy bumber and they are the same. Therefore, I purchased the 2005 air dam which matched up with my bumper, and then I could mount the new air 2005 dam extension to the new 2005 air dam. The fit is like factory, no modifications required.

I would check to see if the 2005 GMC pumper matches the bumber for your 2004, if it does the gray air dam and black air dam extension for the 2005 should fit on your 2004 GMC.

Good Luck

I just recieved and installed the 3 inch airdam on mine. I figure the truck was a May 2004 build date. Took about 49.7 seconds to install, except I don't have the bolts in yet since I don't have any in my supplies.
I took my chances and ordered from GMPartsdirect the part number 10386198. Cost was 17.89 plus shipping of $13, but I also got the off white synthetic connector for the front axle vent.
Not the greatest of pictures but I did my best. First one is the airdam as seen from the outside, second one kind of shows the mounting tabs that snap in place, and the third one shows where the 16mm bolt will attach.

Thanks! My Chevy is a very early '04 (August '03 LB7). No way is the cover the
same. Here's some differences in the two covers....
I haven't finished the install, but I'll get some final pics soon.
HERE (http://207.53.239.181/%7Eterry/truck/AirDam/) is a small write up of the two different covers for the Chevy.

After adding this to my '04 LB7, my gut feeling is no, but I have no
scientific proof to back that up. I added just because I like my
truck to be "different" than all the other belly-buttons running
around here in DFW.

good luck,

I have heard of an increase in fuel mileage.
That is why I'll be adding one.

And with the 06' 1/2 tons having the same front end as ours their air damn should bolt right up.
