: 05 mileage is terrible
hollywood 08-28-2005, 12:33 PM :help: I traded my '03 LB7 for an '05 LLY and now I am regretting it. I tow a 48 foot enclosed car hauler with 2 cars a golf cart, etc. I had an Edge Juice module on my LB7 and got between 11 and 12 mpg while towing this rig. I got a new juice module for my LLY and towed to a race with only 1 car in the trailer and got 8.3 mpg! Around town and some freeway driving I now get 12 mpg. My LB7 got 16! Also, my fan clutch seems to engage very often on the LLY while towing. The power is great with the Juice on the LLY but seems to smoke a lot at the slightest cracking of the throttle. One more thing: On the LB7 I had the module set on #2 for towing and #4 for around town driving. On the LLY I set the Juice on #1 for towing and #4 for around town. Everything else is stock on my LLY as was the LB7 when I had it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.:help:
I just put a post on the board also about my 1st tow, I tried with and without my programmer. The bad "slipping" feeling with the Preadator has me concerned. My brother has a LB7 4wheel drive like mine and gets 12 pulling the same size trailer. I hope we can get some help on the mileage thing.
Italian Stallion 08-28-2005, 03:04 PM I'm no expert by any means....but from reading and reading and talking to GM techs...(my neighbor Pete) He says to wait for the truck to break anywhere from 10 to 15,000 miles on it before you will see a mileage improvement. Mine now has 19000 miles on it and with a heavy foot I am averaging 12 m.p.g. in the city... I really haven't had a chance to tow my trailer yet...(labor day)..I'll let ya know.
Chuck1 08-28-2005, 07:03 PM I took mine into the stealership to complain last week. I have 11,000 miles, and it still only gets 13.8. My 02 did 17 everyday. I am pi@##ed. I told them I would have never let my 02 go if I had had a clue. I'm stuck with this one for a bit,but believe me when oportunity knocks I will answer, and this truck will most likely be gone. On the plus side though nothing else has gone wrong with it yet.
blue68383 08-28-2005, 07:09 PM I have 5,000 mi on mine. I don't tow but empty I have been getting 19-20 mpg mostly freeway driving @70-75mph. I get 17-18mpg around town. This is hand calculated and is right in line with what my dad gets with his 04 LB7.
DMaxNut 08-28-2005, 08:34 PM I'm with Blue. I have 2000 miles on the odo. now and average 19-20 highway at 70-75 and get about 17-18 city/hwy combined. These are hand calculated values. FWIW, I always use "premium" diesel from BP or another local place that uses Schaffer's additives. I'm not sure whats up with some of these horrible mileage LLY's??
Are you running your predator on 100hp?
do you have the same shifting issue that I have?
what is a finger stick and an EGR blockoff plate and what do they do?
blue68383 08-28-2005, 11:35 PM 3-D, Yes I run the predator on 100hp. I will be getting an ATS tranny from Mike L. soon:D . The predator has weird funky shifts on all the settings at first for a while. It seemed like it took forever for it to finally start shifting right. I just kept driving it around and now it shifts normal. The Fnger Stick is a little wire harness made by Fingers, a member on this forum that when installed, tricks the ecm into thinking that the egr is working so that you don't set any codes that put you into limp mode when you disable the egr. Send Fingers a pm for more info. EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation which means that the exhaust is recirculating back into the intake. They do this for emmissions. The EGR blocker plate is a plate that blocks the egr so it doesn't go through my engine. I got the egr blocker plate from Diesel Performance Shops, a supporting vendor. I hope I explained that well enough.

Damn, must be nice! I get about 15-16 on a good day when driving about 75 on the highway. I have 5K on it right now. Sure hope it improves and the truck gets a little more power as it breaks in. Right now I wish I had my 03 back.
chevyhunter 08-29-2005, 07:44 PM I tend to agree about the mileage. I have 3,000 miles now and average 14.5 in the city and around 16 on the highway at about 70-75 mph. Not sure how you guys with the same mileage or less are getting 19-20 hwy and 16-17 city. And I try to drive with a light foot. FWIW
blown65 08-29-2005, 09:42 PM Ya, my 03 got way way better mileage chipped or no chip. Even when my 03 had 6k miles it was far ahead of this 05. :(
blue03duramax 08-29-2005, 11:32 PM love the mileage on my 03 i get 13 pulling a 32 foot 5th wheel camper at 70 mph with an edge attitude on level 2. And i get 20-24 on trips not towing with the edge on level 3. Also 4 inch strait pipe.
RickDLance 08-30-2005, 12:47 AM Are any of you guys getting poor fuel mileage hearing your fan run alot, or your temp gauge move at all while driving?
blue68383 08-30-2005, 12:07 PM My fan does not run while driving normally. It has only come on once when I was running it hard in 100+ heat.
MAX4X4 08-30-2005, 04:01 PM First post........Hi everyone!
I have 2000 miles on mine and at 70-75 I get about 17mpg. I have started my truck up in the morning when it's 60-70 degrees and the fan runs for awhile .......do I have a problem with mine or what?
oteo125 08-30-2005, 04:13 PM i just added the edge and my dic says im getting about 2mpg more. i will have to run the whole tank to see if its really doing better.

MAX4X4 08-30-2005, 04:40 PM Thanks!

hollywood 08-30-2005, 08:57 PM When I tow my fan comes on all the time. Talk about LOUD! Besides being annoying it has to be hurting my mileage.
RickDLance 08-30-2005, 09:45 PM hoolywood, try the overheaters mods. See if they help.
gary1466 08-31-2005, 06:18 AM hi i get 15-16 at 73mph 20-21 at 55 with 04.5 ext cab fwd mileage is not much better than my 6.0 01 gas when hauling a 13000 pound tractor on a fifth wheel trailer power doesn't seem to be as good as when it was new haven't been back to dealer to talk to them it's all stock
LarryJewell 08-31-2005, 08:16 AM I stacked my edge with a bullydog and increased from around 11.5 mpg all around driving to around 15.5. I run the edge on 4 low fule boost 5 and the bully dog on level three. this is a very strong stack, no 1093's, no bursting, just good smooth performance. I will be traveling to colorado next week and will report back on highway mileage. Will be trying different levels to see what happens.
LarryJewell 08-31-2005, 08:17 AM I was running the edge stacked with the predator before I went to bully dog with lots of bursting and an occasional 1093.
DMaxNut 09-03-2005, 10:05 AM I tend to agree about the mileage. I have 3,000 miles now and average 14.5 in the city and around 16 on the highway at about 70-75 mph. Not sure how you guys with the same mileage or less are getting 19-20 hwy and 16-17 city. And I try to drive with a light foot. FWIW
I got 20.8mpg the other day on the highway. Fueled up, got on hwy and set cruise at 65. Exited, fueled up, and checked mileage. FWIW, going 65 vs. 75 gains me about 2 mpg. If you are only getting 16hwy at a reasonable speed, there is something wrong with the truck. I have two buddies with LB7s and their mileage is about spot on with mine when driven the same. I definitely notice a slight mileage increase when using "premium" diesel as opposed to the regular stuff...less rattle also.
rogdog 09-03-2005, 11:24 AM My '05 is passing 13,000 miles. With a light foot or cruise I will get a reading on the dic of 22+ on a flat stretch of freeway at 65 (reset while cruising for instant reading.) If I do the same thing at 75; 18mpg. Conclusion? after 2000 RPM she really starts drinking fuel. My average tank, hand calculated, is 15mpg. I putt around San Diego county for a living, 60% surface and 40% freeway, 1 burnout per tank average.
I've been doing the reset for instant reading a lot just to see what conditions use the most fuel on my usual routes. All the usual suspects show up. Hard acceleration. Trying to maintain speed on a steep hill. Stop and go. +2000RPM cruising.
You can baby it and improve the mileage. Let it coast down in speed on the freeway hills. Idle it up surface street hills. Time the lights etc. I'll get about about 30 miles more from a tank if I'm really diligent about it. But, it drives me friggin' nuts.
I'm not comparing mine to an LB7. My last truck was a 4X2 Sierra 1500 with a 4.8L. The Max gets about 10% better econ than that one, driven the same way in the same places. One of the places I drive to is my AZ ranch 20 miles down a dirt road, accross a high desert arroyo, pulling a trailer. I suspect the Max won't have me spending the night, stuck in that arroyo, lacking the power or traction to pull my 7000# trailer out.
From my perspective this truck is far superior to my last one. It's also far more expensive both to purchase and to maintain. I'm not sure if it's worth it yet. Time will tell.
