What's it called? When is it available? Is it fast? It's sharp in black. If its not fast I don't want it. I hate cars that look fast and aren't.

It's like a Mazda Miata.... not a true high performance sports car but looks like a lot of fun.

Yea I live a few miles north of it. I would expect them to be busy building those. Good for them, they needed the shot in the arm.

The Ecotec has been modified to over 1200HP so far.

How fast do you want to go?

Funny how the imports with the same HP are represented as fast, and the America cars as slow.

By the way, I just did a little research. At 177HP, the Solstice has more power than any of it's price competitors (Miata, MR2, Eclipse), costs less, and gets better mileage.

Why is GM so anti-supercharger?

Superchargers ruin fuel mileage. GM would rather put a bigger engine in than a blower.

PS - GM makes a supercharger kit for the Ecotec available from GM Performance Parts.

cobalt ss is supercharged, but it is the 2.0L putting out 205bhp... i have been looking for the solstice everywhere and nothing yet... also it's cousin is the saturn sky, but the solstice appeals to me a lot more than the saturn, and besides, I am Pontiac power guy... well the real pontiac motors

Parasitic losses with the throttle closed mostly. Combined with lower compression engine configurations, it is no wonder few supercharged engines get great mileage.

What about turbos? The 3.8 GN motor was one of the best things to ever come out of Detroit.

a contact person from Detroit drove one down here a while back.
I was on 2nd and only saw her driving it out of the parking lot but they had it in the plant for display.

General Motors Corp. will add a third production shift in January 2006 at its Wilmington, Del., plant to meet growing demand for the Pontiac Solstice and build two additional roadsters.

GM said about 550 idled workers will be recalled to staff the third shift, boosting hourly employment at the plant to about 1,750.

More than 15,000 orders for the Solstice roadster have been received to date, GM spokesman Dan Flores said. The car went on sale in August.

GM, which had planned to build between 15,000 and 17,000 2006 model-year Solstices, plans to increase production of the vehicle by 3,000 to 5,000 more with the extra shift.

GM is also expecting strong demand for the Saturn Sky and a new Opel roadster, which are scheduled to go into production at the plant next year.

With all three models, the plant is expected to produce roughly 30,000 to 35,000 vehicles a year, Flores said.

However, the additional production won't push plant output to maximum capacity.

More than 200,000 units can be produced annually at the factory, said Catherine Madden, production analyst for Global Insight Inc.

"They are going to keep the Solstice under 25,000 units a year," Madden said. "It's a very successful product, but its low volume, so it won't change GM's fortune."GM discontinued output of the Saturn L series in Wilmington in June 2004. The plant hasn't operated on three shifts since the 1980s, Flores said.

Sky output is expected to begin during the first half of 2006 while the Opel, which will be sold in Europe, will be added to the line in the second half of next year, he said.

Even as GM boosts output at the Wilmington plant, the automaker is saddled with too many North American assembly plants and is expected to identify factories to be closed by year-end.

Turbos utilize otherwise wasted energy (exhaust) to make more power by spinning a compressor wheel. Superchargers take HP to make HP. I'll take a turbo any day...

Great car but did anyone think of what they would look like with a license plate on the front? Ain't pretty.

There are spy photos out of a Turbo Solstice rated around 250 hp.

Corvette tuner Chuck Mallet has put a LS2 6.0 under the hood of a Solstice.
That should satisfy your need for speed. ):h
