: Need tool ideas for Green keys
Alaskan 08-26-2005, 02:27 AM Hi gang,
I ordered some green keys from gmdieseltech.com. I also ordered the "rental" tool for changing the keys. When they emailed me my receipt, they said they were out of the tool. Now what do I do??
I am not too familiar with these keys. Can I do it without the tool? Is there another tool that will do this job safely?
If you know of a tool, please provide some details...as I am new to this suspension work. This is on my 2004.5 Crew cab Diesel.
Thanks....Alaskan
akdiesel 08-26-2005, 03:14 AM It is very easy to do. I went to Sears and got the two prong puller. Can't remember what size it was but I want to say about 8 - 10 inches of travel.
You can also do a search on the web for changing out green keys. I found a site that gave some good info for it.
Remember after doing the install and adjusting the keys to your size get the front end aligned.
freyguy 08-26-2005, 12:16 PM I just did mine with the Crafstman 7ton 2 arm gear puller. I was a bit worried because of the horror stories I read, but it went just fine. I think it was around $35. I did tie a rope to the tool and to the frame just to stop it or slow it down if it came off.
TheBac 08-26-2005, 01:26 PM You guys using a 2 arm puller are just nutz.
If you suddenly stop posting we'll know why...
But...to each his own......
03GMC2500HD 08-26-2005, 01:38 PM gear puller....yeah you don't really need a face.
Dude, wait if you have to but use the right tool for the job.
dogger 08-26-2005, 02:39 PM I bought the biggest 2 arm puller Sears had. Just went really slow and did not have a problem. I used a large C clamp as well. Be careful though if 1 of the arms came off it would mess you up pretty bad.
akdiesel 08-26-2005, 04:58 PM Oh come on we all take risks now and then, speeding, drag racing, etc...
As mentioned if you take precautions, things SHOULD go fine.
_nar_ 08-26-2005, 11:36 PM If you want to use a gear puller break out your torch and cut a U out of some 3/8 plate that fits over the torsion bar crossmember. Take the arms off and bolt that in where the arms go. That way it can't come off.
02AlliMax 08-27-2005, 12:16 AM I also used Sear's 2 jaw puller.......it was a little spooky, BUT, it worked and I am here to tell you about it!! :ro)
chevyhd1 08-27-2005, 05:09 PM yeah i went through two c clamps putting those things on. Bent the first one, broke the second and the third was just good enough to do it. Glad thats over with.
1dmax 08-27-2005, 09:42 PM go buy a ball joint press, it will do the job safely, if you look you can get one for about 40 dollers at on of those harbor freight stores.
Kappa9012 08-27-2005, 11:55 PM No freakin way I pondered using a c-clamp until I was under the truck with my face right there, I payed the 90 bucks and bought one from www.ToolKing.com had it in two days, and it took 10 minutes to pull my torsion bars out.
One of the smartest investments I've ever made.
7 ton gear puller : $35
green keys for the elevation : $50
trip to the emergency room : pricey !
Kappa9012 08-28-2005, 09:49 AM AHAHAHA Nice :lol2:
Joey D 08-28-2005, 04:35 PM When I was doing a lift on my brothers truck I used a impact extension, channel locks and a floor jack. I just held the extension with the channel locks and jacked up the bottompushing the key up until I could slide the adjuster in. I was stuck at that spot and was going to do it. I had a puller but it would not work and progress must continue
Alaskan 08-28-2005, 07:43 PM Thanks for all the info. I think I will wait until I can buy of rent the correct tool. Then again...if I get antsy and can't wait .....

.....you'll hurt yourself severely.
roreedmx 09-01-2005, 02:24 PM You can also use a ball joint press as well. That worked good for me.
blnagel 09-01-2005, 04:08 PM I used a Snap-On 2 gear puller that had a stablizer accross the middle. It worked well. It did moan and creak alot. I wonder how it would have been using the correct tool? I went to the stealer and asked if I could borrow their tool but had lent it out and was never returned.
