The term "flywheel" is generic. The "flexplate" applies to an automatic transmission application. The flexplate bolts to the crankshaft flange and bolts, on the outboard side, to the torque convertor.

The Mopar gas engines used a small, flat piece of metal that was actually a "flex plate" to connect the engine to the torque convertor. It had no balance weights or ring gear on it. Just the small bolt circle for the crank and the four outer bolt holes for the torque convertor. That, in my opinion, was a true "flex plate".

The GM flywheel/flexplate has balance weights, when needed for an externally balanced engine, and the starter ring gear. Most have dual pattern outer bolt holes to fit more than one type of torque convertor. Same for most Ford applications.

The actual correct term "flywheel" belongs the the heavy unit that a clutch/pressure plate bolts to on a standard transmission application.

It's a flywheel to some, a flexplate to others. Just a term for the piece that connects the engine to the drivetrain. Hope this helps.

Looks like a manual transmission flywheel. I've never seen one exactly like the one in the picture. Dave, are you out there? Or anyone, chime in.
