Why won't GM build a 3/4 ton crewcab with a small bed like they do for the 1/2 ton silverado. As popular as they are (I see the 1/2 ton crewcabs EVERYWHERE) you would think GM would build a heavier truck like this.

http://photos.velocityjournal.com/images/stk/2004/ch2004silverado1500crewc961190m.jpg

Let's see:
Diesel power or big gas engine for towing
roomy interior for passengers.
Small enough to fit in a garage  And easier to park and manuever

I personally only need a 3/4 ton to tow stuff. I never load a bunch of stuff in the bed. If I ever have things that are too big I throw them on a trailer.
If it wasn't for the heavy towing I'd do I'd pick up one of those 1/2 ton Z71 crewcabs right now.

Enough of my  Am I the only one who feels this way or should GM jump on this.

GM does make a CC/SB config. There are 3 frames:

RC/LB - EC/SB

CC/SB - EC/LB

CC/LB

The crewcab shortbed is a very popular configuration for the 2500HD's. 3500's (dual or single) do not have SB available.

Couple reasons that they aren't made that I can think of...
Even the short box trucks are marginal for pulling a fifth-wheel trailer/camper...a shorter box would take this capability away I believe..
also, when it comes right down to it, most people get a truck for the box..hauling motorcycles, wood, moving stuff, etc....that short bed would be a handicap for this as well...
In truth, when you mention hauling people and such, what you're really after is a suburban, not a pick-up truck...

I'm talking about the crewcab with the mini truck bed like in the pic I posted. They only make it in the 1/2 ton configuration

Good logic about the 5th wheel.

As far as needing an SUV, I disagree. Look at all the ford Supercrews on the road and chevy 1/2 ton crewcabs with a short bed. Plenty of room for camping gear, gas cans, bags of potting soil, etc.

how much shorter is the small bed vs the short bed??

9 inches

However the overall length is only different by 7 inches 230" to 237"

so why is it important to your to have a shorter bed?

not to be a troll, but maybe it's because a 5.5' bed on a crew cab is kinda ghey lookin'. Besides, what on earth would you need a 3/4 with a 5' 6" bed on it that you couldn't use a 1/2 ton for?

Hauling A$$ that’s what.

I don't thing you would be gaining much with a shorter bed maybe 1' in turning radius and 75 lbs.

So how much smaller is the tank on the short-shortbed? One thing that turned me off about the 2500HD shortbed is the small fuel tank compared to the longbed. My 2001 Dodge Ram shortbed quadcab 2500 had a 34 gallon tank. My Avalanche has a 37 gallon tank. And it's shorter than my Ram was. I know because I park it in my garage and have more room with the Av in there now. I don't think a crew cab 2500HD GM shortbed truck would fit in my garage at all, or at least I wouldn't be able to walk in front of it between the bumper and wall to get in or out of the truck!
To me the most appealing combinations are the extended cab, shortbed or longbed GM 2500HD's. The crew cabs are so big, that the shortbed looks really short. The crew cab long bed is a friggin' bus! :)

As a side note...I wonder why no 3500 Short Bed is offered? I know with Ford you can get an F-350 dually short bed...or at least according to their website configurator you can...ive never actually seen one in real life...

FYI, all 1500 Crew Cabs, 2WD,

The Std Bed and Short Bed both have 26gal tanks.
The Std Bed Box is 78.7" Short Bed box is is 69.2" = 9.5" difference. Overall length Std Bed is 237.3", ShortBed is 230.2"= 7.1" difference.
Curb weight Std Bed 5471#, Short Box 4987# = 484# difference
Payload Std Bed 3129#, Short Bed 1913# = 1216# difference.

If you like it so much, buy a crew cab/6.5' and a spare 5'8" bed and then swing by my shop.

I have a torch, welder, and a whole host of air tools we can use..... ):h

my motorcycle just fits in the 6.5 ' bed. Getting gravel, dirt etc. front end loader bucket is 6+ ft wide, barely able to dump a load w/o either dumping a bunch on the ground or on the cab. For me the 5.5' bed is useless. "std" 6.5' bed is a good compromise. (Interesting that chevy calls the 6.5' bed a std bed, the 8' a long bed and the 5.5' short bed, in the old days an 8' would be a std bed, and the 6.5' a short bed!) The cc 6.5' bed is just fine for me. Fits in the garage, (so would a long bed, but I have a deep garage) ok for parking, ok for turning etc. Don't pull a fifth wheel or haul big loads.

Short Bed- Long Bed. I fixed it several years ago with a Ferd. A Friend had a 4x4 Crewcab Diesel with Short Bed and Diesel Tank in Bed= No Room. Solution= Long Bed+ a Rear Frame from a Salvage Truck+ Lengthned Driveline. Took us about 6 Hours. Only Problem was Wife wouldn`t drive it any more because turning radius was BAD:cool:

:flipa:

Because I haul a trailer and I have a normal size garage on my house. A CC with a 5' 6" bed is the same length as a EC with a regular bed. Its the right length to fit in my garage. I can do without the extra 7" of bed length if it means being able to park in my garage. As I said in my original post I DO put stuff in the bed, just not big stuff. The few times I will have items too big for the 5'6" bed I'll just have to use a trailer.

BTW, sorry I'm digging up my old post but I just got finished with my Katrina cleanup :(

Sounds like a good reason to build a real garage for a real truck.

JPRU5112 has a great Idea. Seroiusly though if you want one shortened I'm sure a custom shop could do it. I personally just leave mine out of the garage. After all it is a truck!

I currently have the compromise between a short and long bed. My truck is a CC/SB but the custom flat bed is 7 ft. long. I also have a sliding "bed extension" built in that will lengthen to 8 ft. Sort of like lowering the tailgate on a short bed.
