I am probably going to pull for the first time Saturday night and I need to figure out what kind of hitch I need and how to get to the hitch height right.

if you can fab something by then something as close to your bumper as possible thats adjustible with a 3" opening, if not turn a six in drop hitch upside down with a clevis seems to make 26 on most dmaxs I have seen check out tomacs site duramaxracing.com for pics

26" is best just make sure that what you are using is rated enough to pull the sled. I have seen several hitches and pins break while pulling and that sucks.

This seems to be the best setup I have used. its not hard to make you can get the parts at a Trailer parts store and you will just need a good chop saw and a good welder this one only took me about a hour to make. and maybe 60-70 bucks):h

From experience I can say don't turn a drop hitch upside down for pulling.

if you look I have 2 gussets on the hitch and have used it with no problems so far. The main problem with using a regular hitch upside down is if it bends at all the hook will come off the ball.

let me say it clearer then a strong drop hitch(not the $30 wal-mart hitch) of solid material no tubing with a good gusset remove the ball and install a clevis thru the hole, not the best not even close but if you do not have anything else or time to make one before the pull they will work i have one thats been used repeatedly and i have lent it out to be used by new pullers infact its out right now.

Ditto. I have lent out a drop hitch with a clevis and it comes back intact.

If you want a nice one, go to a local trailer repair place with a picture and they can hook you up. I think mine cost $75.

I used a Clevis before I built my current hitch.:) They do get the job done a lot better than a Ball:D

I used to pull with a solid 6" drop hitch upside down, with a clevis. Till I snapped it clean off, at about 230'.

I made my own. 2" solid bar stock that slides in, then it rises about 6", no gussets just welded together with multiple passes. Then I have a 1" clevis welded to the top laying horizontal. The clevis is straight, not twisted, and the eyelets are cut off. Not one sign of fatigue with over 30 hooks on it.

I'm working on an easily adjustable design, that's strong, adjustable in seconds, adjustable in 1/4" increments, and keeps the hook point close to the truck. It'll be over the winter before I have time to make it. If I get it done and tested I'll make it available to everyone else.
