63teamster 08-23-2005, 08:49 AM Recently purchased an 06 Sierra 2500 crew 4x4( LLY?) and have a lot to learn about the truck. I have been driving class 8 (in-line 6's) diesels for 14 years but have little experience w/ the v-8 pick up versions. Love the truck so far, Allison 6 speed will be handy, havent towed yet so havent tried out the manual shift mode, only 385 miles on truck. I am hearing a lot of conflicting info about maintenance, synthetics v. petroleum, fuel conditioner and on and on... Truck getting about 14.4 mpg now, should get better. Seems to have plenty of power, though i've been babying it. Can't seem to get an answer from dealers on whether it's supposed to have a wait to start/glowplug light,if so ,it's in-op. Dealer thinks 06 does'nt have one but it illuminates for a split second on start up,then goes out
Advice appreciated, also new to this forum.
Thanks
Sollly 08-23-2005, 09:56 AM They do have a wait to start light, but you won't see it unless it's cold out. Even then it will only light for a second or two. Little squigly light at the upper left of the inst. cluster. High output something or other on the glow plugs. Do some searches for all your questions on the othere issues and decide for yourself.

Your truck should have come with two manuals at least my 05 did. One is a bunch of info on just the d-max. If you read that you will learn alot on the operation and maintains. But you will no dout learn more in this forum.

Answers to most common questions can be found in the manual. Getting folks to read those manuals is a different story.. ;-)
1stdiez 08-23-2005, 03:04 PM Welcome to the board:ro) .Great place for newbies to learn about their trucks and get worry about them at the same time.
bikerdan 08-23-2005, 07:59 PM Any web site to read the 06 owners manual? and service manual?
63teamster 08-23-2005, 10:11 PM Thanks for the advice, I did read the owners manuals and it said that there is indeed a glowplug light,I called the dealer and they said that GMC did away with it for 06,I told him the duramax manual still stated it was to supposed to work and he said he'd get back to me and of course, never did.(I'm in So Cal and it never gets cold here anyway)
I hear a lot from the armchair mechanics at work about using fuel conditioners( I read the thread about low sulfur fuel and additives and am more confused than before as to whether its a good idea to use them), what brand and type of oil to use, when and what to change the ATF with,etc... Obviously w/ only 400 miles on truck I have plenty of time to learn, just want to do it right. Also read the thread about overheating and poor fuel mileage and am definitely wondering if i shouldnt have got a powerstroke instead, guess i'll have to wait and see.Only problem I've had so far is a squeak/bumping noise when turning that comes from the left front side, but i added cab steps that use the O.E.M. rubber cab mounts to bolt up. Anybody else had this problem?
Thanks for the responses-
McRat 08-23-2005, 10:48 PM You're glowplug light will BARELY come on, if at all. The glowplugs take less than a second to get ready.
Standyne (sold at your Chevy dealer and many other places) is the GM recommended fuel conditioner. It is optional.
Your cooling system is different for 2006, as is your engine computer, turbo, transmission, injectors and some other parts.
You are actually a pioneer, few people have the 06's yet.
Italian Stallion 08-23-2005, 10:59 PM I looked at one the other day but ended up with a used "05" that had 18000 miles on it instead...Couldn't stomach the price of the "06".(somewhere in the $58,000.00 range but it was lifted and had custom wheels on it)The dealer did however tell me that the "06" had more h.p. and torque than the "05". Congrats ...The truck is definatly nice.
63teamster 08-25-2005, 08:31 AM not that i know of,no site listed in literature i got w/ truck, just an address and phone for ordering manual,$35.00 charge
63teamster 08-25-2005, 08:36 AM If i am a pioneer,we're all in trouble. Will let you know as things progress. I wont be towing with truck for a while, but when i do,i will post info on whether it overheats, fuel economy,etc.. This ought to be interesting-- Thanks for all the reply's
63teamster 08-25-2005, 08:42 AM I got lucky w/ this one,we have a supplier discount through my employer(we haul for GM) turns out to be about 2.5% over invoice (GMS pricing). Its amazing how many companies out there have this deal.Even more amazing was finding a dealer willing to sell one at this price when there are'nt that many 06;s out there yet. Got mine at Rio Rancho in Pomona,CA. There is also a $2000 rebate on these until 9-06-05
Rob147 08-25-2005, 08:56 AM I understand that the early 06 trucks have the same LLY engine as the 05 trucks - 310/605. In December the LBZ engine will be introduced with 360/450.

ockgator 08-25-2005, 11:27 PM 63... check LF cab mount. There are A couple of ground straps there that are bolted to frame. Steps are prob rubbing on them, just use a bit shorter bolt or add washers behind bolt head. They are metric, 6mmx1mm, 10mm wrench size
DuramaxKid 08-25-2005, 11:44 PM Not sure but i think they improved the glowplugs in the 06's so that is prob why your light barely comes on you will see a differance in the winter when it is colder. It gets in the 0's where i live and i haven't had any trouble with any of the chevy duramax's that i have owned. Never have plugged then up either...

Pomona eh? I'm in Corona. Sure would be nice to spend an hour looking at your 06 sometime. I'll buy the beer. Need to see some things concerning the computers.
bikerdan 08-26-2005, 03:51 PM Does the 06 LLY have the improved injectors, torbo ect? or just the LBZ?
