: Fuel and Paint Damage
John R 01-21-2004, 11:41 PM <DIV>Sometimes when I fuel up I get A flow that runs down the quater panel.</DIV>
<DIV>I wipe it off the best that I can at the time, but fuel oil is kind of hard to clean off when it cold outside, and I don't want to have to go to the car wash every time I get fuel.</DIV>
<DIV>Do any of you guys notice any damage to your paint from this? </DIV>
<DIV>What do you do when this happens?</DIV>
Max Power 01-22-2004, 12:16 AM If you have a white truck it might stain. I don't know for sure, just guessing.
DMAXPWR 01-22-2004, 01:06 AM This has happened to me several times with no damage yet. Also my truck is white.Only real problem is it seems to collect more dirt there then!
bowtiebob 01-22-2004, 02:44 AM I don't think that the fuel causes any real damage. On my old truck, which was the early 90's style, there was trim under the gas door. The chrome on this trim was stained a little after 12 years, but other than that the paint was fine. With these rigs, where there is no trim, unless you had the white or maybe the silver, I would almost gaurantee you'd never notice.

Victory Red 01-22-2004, 06:52 AM John R,
Mines red but on occasion if I have an overflow due to the pump not shutting off in time I get a run down. All i've ever seen if not properly cleaned is a tack spot where the fuel hit. I usually use an all purpose cleaner like Goo Gone to remove if it's dried enough and become tacky. Haven't noticed any problems with the paint in this area up to this point as of yet.
Lonewolf867 01-23-2004, 02:10 PM If I get a spill I will wipe off the excess then clean it with a wet towel from the windsheild cleaner bucket.
I always make sure that area of the truck has plenty of wax on it! I try to wax that section every couple washes. I would think the fuel oil would take the wax off that spot...
17k miles and no problems yet..http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
ShumDit 01-23-2004, 02:29 PM I've notice I dribble a lot of fuel too ~ Think I'll start carrying a squirt bottle of simple green for a quick cleanup.
TCosgrove 01-23-2004, 05:08 PM Speaking of wax jobs. I remeber BACK IN THE DAYwhen I was driving a dumptruck for a living a bunch of guys always wiping down their B Models with a rag dipped in Diesel Fuel. Boy those Green Macks looked good. Keept em from rusting out too.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
However i don't think Im gonna do that to my new one WHENit gets here.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Dave Ski 01-23-2004, 05:56 PM I keep a spray bottle of window cleaner stuffed into the pocket of the back door, just give the spill a couple of squirts to disolve the oil. No problem so far. Sometimes I don't get a chance to rinse it off and there's no additional dirt accumulation in the area.
Oh yeah, the stuff works good on the windows too!

GUYS!!!! This should not be happening!!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif What part of fuel pissing out all over your truck is exceptable? Sorry for yelling but we drive diesel trucks, we need to use high volume pumps...a $45,000+ truck should be able to handle it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif We do not need to reinvent the wheel either...my other two trucks had ZERO problems with filling....now today I had to order the TransferFlow....and guess what it is? The same system used on Fords. The guy who I placed to order with was supprised the GM was still using it. He also told me Ford stoped using our vent system in 1997.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
Again I am very sorry for yelling.....off to get another Sam Adams.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
Mackin 01-23-2004, 10:32 PM Window cleaner, Simple Green, filling station wash bucket, good grief .... All that will cut the wax and leave paint more vulnerable....
When I get a little over hurried and it froths over with foam I'll use a quick detailer and rag this of course if truck is clean, which it normally is .... Otherwise I use bottled water, rag, then quick detailer ... I use Zaino products ...
Mac
i have a 92 f-250 7.3 i/h with 192k. its a work truck so i never gave a rats ass about overfill, never wiped it off, never waxed it and i only washout the bed. paint looks the same around fuel door as rest of truck.

I've heard of this, and seen it as well, with no harm done. Wouldn't do it too mine, but also know it won't hurt anything if I spill a little down the side
