Since the new 18:1 engine the glow plug controler has had an adjustable timer put on so the plugs can heat longer. What i'm wondering is how long the guys with 18:1's are running there glow plugs to get a clean start on the engines.
I started out with about 10 secs on the timer. Truck fired good but shortly after that it would stumble and blow white smoke. Shutting it down and running another cycle and all would be fine.
I've set the timer for 25 seconds now, start it after 15 seconds and let the glows continue while its running, no more stumbling or white smoke so far. These low compression motors can be pigs to start from what i'm seeing.

What chokes me about this controler is it always throws codes on the SES, is there a way around that because its really annoying, the only time i want to see that light is if something is really wrong!

What's the rest of the 18:1 community experiencing?

I was hoping you would chime in. I haven't tried that, are you just using the stock glows and controler?

yea, stock controller, brand new plugs though, bout 3000 miles on them. Sometimes, when it is 90 out side, I get out of work and just hit the key and she starts up, no wait time, no heavy white smoke or stumbling. plug in your scanner, watch the glow plug volts.

Guys,
Check with penninsular, I used one of their spark plug type glow heaters tapped into the intake in addition to the glow plugs and wired to come on at the same time and it worked like a champ down to -10f. Long glows of about 30 seconds might be required when it gets really cold.;)
