I Have A 02 Gmc Short Bed Crew Cab, 120,000 Miles, K & N Filter, Enlarged Exhaust With A Performance Muffler. Used To Get 19 To 21 Mpg, At Moderate Speeds Of 65 Or So Highway. These Decreased To About 17 Or So When Running About 80. The Last 10 To 20,000 Miles I've Been Experiencing A Loss Of Mileage Down To About 15 Or 16, And Loss Of Power, With Dark Smoke Even When Accelerating Moderately. When I Floor It, It Takes Much Longer To Get To Speed, And Seems To Shift Hard, Not Accelerating Very Well. From What I Have Read In These Forums, The Mass Air Flow Sensor May Be The Problem. I Removed The Air Filter To See If That Helped, But It Didn't. I Also Changed The Fuel Filter, With No Change.
I Don't Have Any Idea Where The Mass Air Flow Sensor Is, So I May Clean It. I Also Need To Know How To Clean It.
Some Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated!

If you haven't thrown and ses codes I would doubt that it would be the mass air sensor.Have you had it scanned for codes?

If you would like to clean the Mass Air nonetheless it is located at the beginning of the air cleaner snorkel. It has a electrical connection plug. You will need a thin blade screw driver to remove the screws.

A decent non-lubricating spray electrical contact cleaner is my choice to use.

If you have the truck scanned for codes I would also check the injector balance rate.More likely Could be a possibility for your poor performance and fuel econo.

Good luck

Sounds more like a leak in the charge air cooler pipes, hoses, intercooler. Check all the clamps at the blue hoses. Also check the upper blue hose on the drivers side for a hole on the back side. The drivers pipe can rub threw on the ps gear box lines. Your dealer can test the cooler.

K&N filters are not recommended for use because the oil in the filter will distroy your mass air flow sensor. Ask your dealer about this.

And the holes in (brand not mentioned) filter media are so big they let a lot of dirt through. Dirt and diesels don't mix, just ask George about that.

Search for air filter test in the forums. I believe the stock AC Delco air filter was determined to be the best (or one of the best) filter to use.
