Ive never heard of it in your fuel, but Ive heard about it in your oil. They say to replace a quart with tranny fluid, it helps clean out the journals and passages.

hmm tranny fluid in your oil maybe, but I wouldn't go near my fuel system with tranny fluid.

This was something that over the road truckers did decades ago. I am not sure how good of an idea it is with a Bosch super high pressure common rail system such as the Duramax.

Hey,

Back in 2000, when I was workig at a gas station, a regular customer used to run it religiously in all of his diesels, his mots recent then was a 2000 mercedes sedan. Said it helped lube and keep the injectors clean, since we have had low sulfur diesel since 1994, ( 5 ppm at the time. ) it really helped with the lubricity. He put in 100ml to every tank of diesel!!

Take care,

Will

Now really guys, come-on -- you'll spend $35k - $45k on a truck and try to save a buck by doing some "shade-tree mechanic" fuel additive (or just as bad, motor oil additive)?!!! :badidea:

If you feel the need for a fuel additive, then use one of the quality engineered products, you can read about many opinions of same on this site.

IMHO you should not be adding anything to your oil, if you really think Rotella or Delo isn't good enough for your baby, after it's broken in switch to a synth oil (again, many suggestions of which to buy on this site).

Whenever i change a fuel filter on the loaders and excavators at work i fill them with atf. An old timer told me it cleans out the injectors and lines. I've been doing it for years. Can't tell you if it helps but i can tell you that in all these years and about 10 loaders and 6 excavators, i've never come across an injector that had to be changed or cleaned...so maybe it does work. I can't really see it hurting anything. ATF doesn't hurt any o-rings or seals in a trans, and i can't really think of anything else in the fuel system that could be effected.

Some of the Lucas additives for fuel look alot like atf without the red color. I'm very sceptic about certain additives that sells for alot of $. "Sometime" a solution is simple and inexpensive.

I talked to a guy that put 800k on his old 6.5 Suburban and that's what he did. Every now and then he said he put in tranny fluid. Now would I do that - not in a million years.
But I am seriously thinking of going to McDonalds and put in soem used french fry oil.

At least the McDonnalds won't varnish and degrade into all the corrosive chemicals that ATF will under the high engine temps. A touch of ketchup will add the nice red color to the french fry oil as well.

I have never heard of leaving the tranny fluid in your oil... the whole reason it was used was to clean out stuck/clogged lifters when they got build up on them and they no longer would hold pressure. The rule of thumb was to replace one quart of tranny fluid with yoru oil change, but only run it for 30 minutes or so. The additives would eat the built up grime and clean it out... I never would leave it in though, just use cheap oil then drain and be done.

The isuzu rodeo motors have this common problem/sound.. this was the fix for it.

Hope a fish bone doesnt get stuck in an oil line.

but tranny fluid in the oil, shurly would only water the oil to a lower viscosity.

like the man said $50,000 for a truck, what are you thinking???

good luck

I have used the Lucas fuel additive for years. Know it has helped in the wifes Sub. As far as Lucas looking like trans fluid but without the red color? What is that supposed to mean? ATF is thinner, smells different, is just different.

I had my Dealer tell me the same thing. They said GMC was going back to the old school way, I asked what that was and there reply was to add ATF every other tank. I asked if there was TSB out on this and they said no, I then asked if they would put it in writing the answer was no. I told them my answer is NO! I know it was and old trucker trick but not sure I would want to test it out on our very $$$$ high pressure systems.

only she was shorter and her face was different.

I was under the impression that transmission fluids contain "friction modifiers" that were added to the fluid to help the clutches engage & not slip. This is not something that I would want to put through a 20,000 PSI fuel injection system!:badidea:

Hopefully, the fuel filter is eliminating the "friction modifiers" from entering the high pressure pump. All this will do is plug up your fuel filter sooner.
If the fuel filter doesn't catch it, then is will wear out your pump & injectors sooner.

Why bother with something that is not specifically designed & approved for your fuel system?
Hey, it's your money. When your system fails, just be sure to tell the GM rep that you have been "helping" your fuel system by adding an unapproved substance to your fuel. ;)

Take Care,

Britt

after my first set of injectors went at 11,000 miles on my '02, the diesel mechanic told me to run a quart of tranny fluid in a full tank of fuel if i was going on a trip as to have it run through the system in 1 day. after doing this i never had a problem with them. before i sold the truck i had them check the flow rates and all were fine. i sold the truck with ~50k miles on it. Tranny fluid is cheap and plentiful. it may have been coincedence, but it did not seem to hurt anything either.

Red tranny fluid in diesel will give it that nice little shade of red the IRS is always looking for! Looks like someone put off-highway diesel in it a couple of fillups ago. Where I live Cotton is King so I don't think it is worth the risk. I'll stick with Standadyne. I don't cost any more per tankful than using tranny fluid.

I have a 93 6.5td. When I bought it in '95 it had 85k on it. The owner ran DextronIII in the fuel then. I have ran a quart to a tankfull in it ever since. It has 210k on it now. Original injectors and original pump. 17-18 miles to a gallon for a 3500, still. Just changed the glows....They were original too to the best of my knowledge....My 2cents is that ATF works. Or at least hasn't hurt mine.

What about Marvel Mystery Oil? I've used it in my Harley's and gas vehicles. Do people use it in diesel applications?
