: New 6-spd w/ the Cummins?
War Wagon 08-20-2005, 11:16 PM Saw an 06 dodge Cummins 6-spd on the lot today. It had a different shift pattern than the NV 5600 used to have. What's special about this new trans. Who makes it? When did it come out? What kind of OD ratio's compared to the NV 5600?
thefermanator 08-21-2005, 12:43 AM I'm not certain about the gear ratios but the trans is supposed to be an mg-56 which is a true medium duty 6 speed trans that mercedes uses in ther medium duty trucks. This is what I read in a dodge newsletter regarding the switchover from the nv-5600. Quite a few people think that since this trans is not one of new venture boxes its junk. But everything that I have read about it says that this trans is way overkill for the cummins, but it is a trans that mercedes makes so it makes sense they would use it instead of somebody elses. I know ther are going to be people who sat I'm full of it about this trans but this is only what I have found regarding this gearbox.
WilliamBos 08-21-2005, 01:05 PM Hey,
Interesting info. Are they getting ready for the new Mercedes diesel when the Cummins run is over?
Also, New Venture Gear ( formerly New Process ) used to be a joint venture between GM & Chrysler. Is it still now?
Take care,
Will
01Duramax6spd 08-21-2005, 02:28 PM The mg-56 is a Getrag made unit.It appears that the only New Venture trans being used now is the nv4500 behind Gm 6.0 trucks.
War Wagon 08-22-2005, 05:55 PM I have read several different places that a Mercedes V8 is schedualed to go for the 07 model year. It makes sence that they would use a mercedes trans but I would have thought that it would come out at the same time as the new engine. I'll bet that it's heavy built. The NV5600 wasn't strong enough. I know guys who were tearing them up.
What does "mg" stand for?
thefermanator 08-22-2005, 06:51 PM All I know is that MG is a manufacturer of parts for some overseas car parts and I also bleive they make cars. I am not certain on this, not even close. But it would make sense to be mercedes gear maybe?
Wolford 08-24-2005, 10:45 PM Cummins and Dodge extended the contract. Cummins aint going anywhere. They may have 2 diesel options but he cummins will always be one.
Kurt W. 08-24-2005, 11:47 PM I heard in another forum that a 800 ft tq cummins is in the works. And they are going to have a 450 and 550 series like Ford? These engines are getting out of control.

I never thought I'd say it but you're right, if you think of it this way. Most people don't go over about 20,000-22,000lbs combined weight on there new duramaxs cummins and powerstrokes, but yet you have over 300 horse available in all of them now. But a fully loaded semi running down the interstate at 80,000lbs is moving along just fine with 500-600 horse at his disposal. so if you look at the ratios most people don't tow but about 1/4th weight but yet they have 1/2 the horsepower. I'm sure the truckers out there would love to have 1,200 horse to work with. I think auto manufacturers should start making better milage and not more :horsey: under the hood, thats just my opinion.
marcummins 08-26-2005, 03:08 PM Well It makes sense that they would have a new cummins on the way seeing that GM has that 360hp duraslug due in 2nd Qt 06 so in true automotive manufacturing fashion follow the leader only bigger and better. Hope they never get ried of the tride and true blue C Matt
tdupuis 08-26-2005, 04:13 PM Part of the issue is you're looking at two different markets. Semi drivers get on the highway and stay on the highway all day long. As sad as it is, many people who buy these Cummins/DMax/PSD trucks use them for commuting or for more localized jobs. In these situations, having something with the higher horsepower numbers makes people happy. They like the better acceleration. Also, check out the fact that a lot of people are only feeding this frenzy by buying the power enhancements for their trucks. Most of these people don't need a diesel, they want one. In reality, the old 190 hp 12-valve Cummins is fine for most people (obviously, seeing as there are still many of them on the road). My 190 hp 6.5L TD never met a hill it couldn't climb even with a 10,000 lb trailer (unless it overheated, but that's another issue), and the same goes for my friend's old Ford with a 7.3L IDI non-turbo.
Cummins HAD mileage down quite well... I've met lots of people who get mid 20s on the highway empty in their 1st and 2nd gen Dodge trucks (especially the 12-valves) and while mine certainly gets good mileage empty at ~22 mpg @ 70 mph, it's not the 24-26 I've heard reported. Then when the EPA came in and made the NOx standards much more stringent, they had to retard the fuel timing and do other various things that kill mileage. That's why there are some people who will find putting a box on will improve (hand calculated) fuel mileage.
I've always said if you don't need a diesel, get a gas motor and if you don't need a truck, buy a car (or a motorcycle). But, nobody wants to hear it.
Cummins600 08-26-2005, 07:54 PM tdupuis...you in Terre Haute now? That's home for me. Not to take over the thread but I curious if you were planning on going to the Diesel Extravaganza this weekend. Scheid is hosting it all this weekend. I was thinking about going down and checking it out, maybe hitting the dyno and watching the drag racing on Sunday.
But to comment....I bought the diesel because I wanted it. Then again about 6 months of the year I NEED it, and six months that I don't. Farming can be very tolling on a truck, and the Hemi I had before COULD NOT HANDLE IT!!!! I agree the Cummins was made to work. Every time I pull with it it runs better!!
thefermanator 08-26-2005, 11:38 PM I agree with the addition of power adding boxes to improve efficiency and milage. And yes I feel the EPA is making things worse not better. They are so worried about what is coming out of the tailpipe that they are not accounting for overall emissions. If said truck has 10% less emissions but 20% less economy how is that helping the enviroment. Because you are using more fuel now to do the same job and exhausting more emissions. I feel that they are to caught up in number crunching, and not the overall picture. As far as having a diesel I got mine because I needed the room and I ocasionally tow, yes I could have gotten by with a gasser. But all my buddies are jealous of my economy because my around town is better than there babying it highway.

I heard the same thing. I also heard that the 450/550 Rams will have the Mercedes Diesel in them, and the 3500/2500 will be Cummins powered!!
Take Care!!

tdupuis 08-28-2005, 01:08 PM Cummins600: I'm not in Terre Haute at the moment, however I'll be back starting Sept 1st. When's the next gathering? I'd be interested in going.
War Wagon 09-05-2005, 11:20 PM Anyone know more about the transmission.

Back when I was considering a Dodge I read up a little on that new 6-speed. Introduced 01/2005 it is called a G56 so people assumed it was a getrag, but it is a mercedes as someone already said. They are installed in medium duty trucks but with less hp then the cummins. The most obvious problem if there is one might be the dreaded dual mass fly-wheel. The NV5600 had the tried and true solid design. I haven't kept up with how it's doing since I went with the D/A.

I try to stay close to home. You can check out Scheid Diesel's website, they occasionally have a link or two to close to home events. I also watch the DHRA site, they have a Comprehensive Schedule link that has a lot listed. On 9/17 KYDTR, and RAW diesel are putting on a little something in Cynthiana, KY. Not sure if I want to go for a one day event. Just a couple places to look. CrankItUpDiesel.com has an events calendar as well with a lot of near Indiana activities.
