Does it matter which, or is it something different for either..........

Indexing............I thought the two tabs line up and it just drops onto the input shaft..............

I thought it can only fit on one way.............or am I incorrect ?????

Installation of the TC

When installing the torque converter, you have the input shaft and stator support splines that need to fall in place along with the front pump slots. It really is not indexing, just proper installation.

I would go out on a limb here and guess that this may be related to an ATS install. As I understand it, the ATS guys often leave the converter on the engine when doing a swap that does not require converter change...

Doesn't matter wether it is an ATS install ( with converter mounted) or not. Rule of thumb is to have converter flats lined up with pump ears for installation. On the heavy Ally converter it does not do you any good because you can't lift the converter and wiggle it in because of weight. We just spin it in while slightly cocking it at 12 and 6 oclock. I think the ATS suggestion of leaving converter in is dangerous and could be very costly.

Wonder if he's talking about rotating TC around flexplate trying to correct engine/trans vibrations?

That is a hail mary move when you have a torque converter that was not ballanced properly. Rarely works. Trust me on this one.

I can't see that working at all....
