Hi guys-
Just turned over 70k mi and I have injector paranoia, maybe.
At idle, the engine is quiet. I had the infamous tick and that went away after 30k or so. I have a tad of idle "rump" but nothing objectionable.
Now, I have a tick/knock that sounds like a noisy lifter. However, what's bugging me is that I only hear it when I'm about 30-60% power. Like for example, I'll get slowed down on a long hill to 45 mph (traffic ) and then I'll gently roll into it and she comes to life, but about 16-1700 rpm there's a ticking that sounds like one cylinder (from the periodicity of it) and gets louder as the rpms come up....it's pretty apparent at say 2400 rpm and up.
Funny thing is, if I floorboard it, it's not all that noticeable. I don't know if that just means the engine volume is just drowning it out at WOT, but I generally don't hear it when I'm full in the throttle.
Pulling a 5k boat made the sound even more apparent. I was in T/H and was doing a lot of half-throttle hold-in-4th driving, which make it pretty obvious.
I've been running the Hot Juice since 35k mi and generally tool around in the 125 setting. The truck pulls hard and I don't feel I'm low on power.
I've checked the idle balance rates several times (I have a buddy with a TechII) and they're always fine (<3). We've sequenced individual injectors on and off, but since it's not an idle noise, nothing changes (other than the cylinder missing).
No diesel in the oil and it smells fine. Change fuel filters at 10k miles all the time. Everything else seems totally in line.
I'm just starting to worry.... :help2:
Anyone ever done the shut-down-a-cylinder trick while driving?
