: broke 2nd flexplate after new trans
dmax3500 08-19-2005, 12:15 AM i just broke my 2nd flexplate/flywheel,had a gm reman trans installed last month,2 weeks later flexplate broke,gm warrentyed it but i was on my way to go motorcycle riding in texas[got stuck in a hotel for a week]got to see old one and flat steel plate was broken around center hub,now 1.5 weeks later its broke again,i think trans or converter is the problum but dealer says their ok,anybody got any ideas
Machinator 08-19-2005, 07:27 AM I'd make sure the two dowel pins on the engine block are in place (3 and 9 o'clock positions). These provide the proper alignement between the engine and transmission. If you're missing one or both you'll be spitting out transmissions and flexplates.
Mike L. 08-19-2005, 10:13 AM I wonder if the dealer tech knows the procedure for torquing the crank bolts that hold the flex plate? You can not just tighten with impact wrench like other flexplates and get away with it. Procedure is to tq to 56-58 ft lb then 60 deg, then 60 more deg on each bolt. This is not an easy procedure and you can get seriously hurt without proper tools.

Max Power 08-19-2005, 10:17 AM So mike, you tighten each one to 56-68 ft lbs, then you tighten each on 60 degrees more, then you go and do each on 60 degrees more again?
ratlover 08-19-2005, 10:21 AM Yes......and it is a M F to get it done!
Mike L. 08-19-2005, 10:39 AM It's the second 60 deg go round that kicks your a$$. It takes 2 people to do it. A torque mutiplyer is in my future because I'm tired of using a 4ft pipe and getting thrown into the right front tire. ):h
dmax3500 08-25-2005, 02:24 PM update, dealer and gm tech say its probuly that the last 2 techs installed flywheels wrong,i hope so becuase i can't take going back to the dealer every 2 weeks and sitting around for a week waiting for them to spc order a new one from izusu, and yes i know they are a ***** to toqure
thanks guys
dmax3500 08-31-2005, 12:25 AM ha, just got the truck back, they replaced [flywheel ,crank bolts, converter bolts, and torque converter], they think the converter didn't fit into crank snout right.. we'll see,the only problum now is the a/c dousen't work [ no freon] dealer says they didn't touch anything,,,gm customer service says the'll help to fix it,there the only help thru all this,,dealer didn't even call to tell me truck was done i had too drive by and see it parked in the lot.
thanks
dmax3500 09-24-2005, 01:07 AM flexplate broke again, now after i had to call gm corp., dealer says both dowel locater pins are missing,so were back to waiting for parts for the 3rd time. i can't beleve i found the only 4 blind techs gm has, even their seeing eye dogs should have seen this[i asked 2 times for them to ck this, but they said no problums found ],this getting sad because i used to work at a dealer.
TVolDMax 09-25-2005, 01:52 PM This is getting to be a major problem in all stealers. Good techs are hard to find and keep. Most start on lube rack and then move to the service line and think they know it all,but have little or no exsperience. Dealers do not seem to understand the complexity of todays vehicles and do not compensate techs for their knowledge. This is even worse in muti line dealership. Todays service manuals are overwhelming in size and info,if the dealership will even purchase most use E info. I left dealership life over 5 yrs ago and never looked back. Use to get hands on training at GM training centers around the country, they closed most and now use CBT. Good techs are lured away by independents for better compensation. Mind you their are alot of good techs out there, but they themselves have developed a large customer base of regulars. Joe Blow off the street will be very lucky if this guy ever works on your truck. They are usually taking care of their regular customers who loyal to them. All others are given to the youngens who think this is what they want to do and your truck is their test ground.
Just my thoughts,
KEEP ON TRUCKIN
dmax3500 10-14-2005, 11:52 PM well i got the truck back last tuesday,it runs , well see if it lasts for more then 1.5 weeks now
NWDmax 10-15-2005, 10:18 PM Good luck!!

If they did the tq procedure properly and installed the dowel pins , as per machinators instructions, you are good to go.
