Well, it was coincidental to getting really cold temps here in Ohio (single digits) so I thought that may have someting to do with it, but I got two start and stalls and some really rough running and idle after 3 months and a couple thousand miles on my KD post-OEM Mega fuel filter. I was installing my toolbox in the bed on Monday and decided to vent the filters. I pumped a couple of times on the primer and the OEM vent screw spit fuel as soon as I cracked it open. When I went to vent the Mega, I saw fuel down at the bottom connection of my sightglass that I put on the vent. I popped the airbox and tightened up that connection which seems to have shrunken/loosened and was an air leak on the dirty side of the Mega. Been starting fine and running much better since, but it's only been a couple of days.

So it was a loose connection ?? Interesting you said when you pumped the OEM it was solid fuel .... When I have done that ,pumped my primer then crack the bleeder sounds like opening a can of sode beer what ever ... Then as soon as I touch the primer it's solid fuel as it is right there ...

Yes I have a pre primary secondary filter ...

Yep, the compression fitting at the bottom of the clear tube. Wasn't loose enough to "wiggle" but took about 20 degrees more with a wrench when tightening. The fittings are for nylon tube and have a little steel nipple inside the tube that prevents the collar from crushing the tubing in the fitting. I guess the old saying that compression fittings are for pressure - not vacuum is true! I was awfully tempted to smear a bit of RTV silicone with a fingertip when I put the vent together, but resisted (maybe I should have followed my hunch!)

Well, I'm post-OEM, so the air inleak was on the dirty side of the Mega between the OEM and the pump. The pump was still pulling fuel up into the OEM, but I was getting air at the Mega.

This adds to my belief that our fuel systems are "air tolerant" (up to a point). The low pressure section of the injection pump can deal with quite a bit of air and I think I got my lopey idle due to fluctuations in the fuel pressure regulator trying to deal with the foamy fuel. There's no way that air/vapor can make it through the high pressure side of the pump and the common rail. As evidenced by the filter "high water marks" on the OEMs, there's an "air pocket" in that filter and I'm sure there's one in my Mega too, because my sightglass runs empty shortly after a venting. I'm not a big fan of running out there and repeatedly venting that vapor out of my Mega and worrying about it. I've gone 3 months and 3,000 miles without a hitch until this obvious leak. Being basically lazy, I'm hoping that I never have to vent the Mega except for filter changes!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gifEdited by: Idle_Chatter
