: Engine Noise

I am hoping someone can tell me if this engine noise I have is normal. I will apologize in advance, for not being the most mechanically inclined. :(

Basically the noise sounds like the transmission is not shifting soon enough. However the transmission is shifting at the proper rpm's. It just seems like when it is doing this (which is not all the time) the engine is a lot louder( and I mean A LOT!) for a given RPM. And when it is louder (Forgive the non-technical reference) it sounds more like a gas engine, than a diesel engine. Also, it seems like this only happens on warmer days and after I have been driving awhile. Hopefully I described this good enough for some help.

Thanks

Tim

on edit: after reading several other posts, I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the pilot injection. This noise occurs when accelerating (not hard though) from a stop. After I am at cruising speed the engine sounds fine. Also I do not think it is the fan, because the sound varies with rpm's. It could be something with the turbo, but it is definately not a whine, it sounds more like a large fan.

I have a 2003 if that matters.

Perhaps its the pilot injection turning off. try a search on pilot injection and see if some of the descriptions match up with what your truck is doing. Mine can turn off in the 2500 RPM range, and is more noticable under load (accelerating hard or pulling a trailer).

More like a gas engine than a diesel? Hmmm. Thats a puzzling one :)

On Edit, after Tim's edit.

Ruled out pilot injection. Perhaps someout outside the truck can help pinpoint it.

its that big 50 hp robbing cooling fan when the clutch engages
