What is a safe EGT temp while towing with the following:

- PPE on level 2 with DPF delete
- EGT temp probe located in passenger manifold

1,200 and under seems to be a good general rule for any kind of sustained pull (up a hill, ect...) Over 1,200 for an extended period or long hill and you should start thinking about backing out of it. 1,400 is still fine for short periods of time. Even up to 1,600 you should be fine, just don't let it stay real high.

Thats an excellant response though in my personal experiance the 1,200 is probably low. When towing our fifth with the old LBZ with adverse wind, even on level highways, we would often be in the 1,250 range for extended lenghts of time. The truck never showed any sign of problems. That is not to say by any means that there is any guarentee of no problems from running that hot. A note on that truck is that I did run an additional engine oil cooler which kept the oil at least 90 degrees cooler than stock under heavy load conditions, so pistons were kept cooler and could well have been the reason we never had problems. Pulling long steep passes I would back off at 1,474 if I couldn't bring temps down with a lower gear; again I think the cooler was playing a significant roll there. I believe the highest I ever saw was just over 1,500 and the pucker reaction takes over pretty quick if you let that number sneak up on you.

Do you guys have the stock left side exhaust manifold (the one with the restriction)?

Where are you putting the EGT probe; left or right side? (I am presuming pre-turbo, given the temps you state).

Are you guys running a tune during these pulls, or totally stock settings? I've heard that if you run stock settings, the factory tuning cannot get hot enough to endanger the engine, but to be honest, those temps you state are a bit scary if they are "stock".

I think most everyone installs the sensor in the passenger side exhaust manifold. My new LML is running 100 to 300 degrees hotter than the LBZ and thats with the sensor and guage that I took off the LBZ. I have not towed since I installed the guage and am very interested to see how the LML is going to react. Since the LML is proving to run exhaust temps so much higher than the LBZ I am counting on the added exhaust temp sensor #1 being a tuning link with the ECM that keeps temps under control when towing. Fingers crossed, if not then the LML is not going to be a good puller; no way Jose.

I tow my 13000# toy hauler with my LLY and have seen 1350 on my egt gauge on stock setting with my edge.
Pyro in the passenger side exhaust manifold.
I tried it with the edge unplugged also and got the same #'s
Hope it is going to be ok.

Stock computer and exhaust - my Edge insight will peg 1425 on big hills and stay there while towing.

I spose I am kinda the odd ball here, my pyro guage is mounted in the drivers side manifold.
The only thing on my truck not stock (drivetrain wise) is the exhaust. That is downpipe back though, so that really shouldn't affect my EGT's to much if at all.

my tow tune is somewhat aggressive (EFI) and works great IMO. my setup weighs around 15,000# (trailer/camper/wheelin rig) and I still have to run it fairly hard to reach 1400*. we ran those large grades out through Denver (on the way to Moab) and never had an issue. dropped it down to 4th and let'r eat

probably sits around 1000-1200* when towing here in the midwest and the allison almost never downshifts around here since it's so flat

Mine is on the driver's side manifold as well.

I have the BD manifold so my probe is in the drivers side too. I tow a 10K toy hauler bumper pull and in the middle of the summer (100+ ambient) pulling a long grade I will hit 1400. Pulling up shorter but steeper grades like Donner Pass will get me in the 1350 range, but usually only for a minute or less. I am regularly at 1200 and so far so good.

With my TT around 8,000lbs I seen 1100 max egt and at 65 I think I was around 8-900.

Pulling the Grapevine and Cajon passes regularly, I will see 1300 pretty consistently in the summer months with the compressional high winds through the canyons.
