: "Heater Performance" in DIC??

When I had my cluster replaced due to a burnt out tranny temp gauge light, I noticed several different things. No O/D lockout light and high indicated oil press...but I talked about those in another thread so they are irrelevant... One other thing I noticed was the dissapearance of the "High Idle" option in the DIC. But there is another extra option now..."heater performance". Is this the same thing as "high idle"??? It sure better be...or else im gonna be mad!!!Censored  Anyone know about this??

Did the clowns that installed you cluster perform the service programing to the cluster. I'm sure not.Have them do the ipc service programing. The clusters are generic and must be programed.(if they put in the proper cluster in the first place).Tim

ahhh that would explain everything. Because if its "calibrated" for the standard 80 PSI gauge, that would make sense, because on start up my truck usually runs around 80 PSI...but on the normal gas clusters, 80 PSI is at the max, so when it tells it to run "80 PSI", it sends the needle right to the top, thinking its point to 80 PSI, not 120 PSI. That would also explain the lack of O/D lockout light...gas vehicles dont have it (except the 8.1/Ally). But do gas vehicles have this "heater performance" option??? What exactly is it?? My truck is at the dealer now and I called the service dept and told them about the high oil press...but like an idiot forgot to ask them about the high idle. Ill try calling them now... Thanks for that info tho, Midwest!

Just talked to the diesel mechanic at the dealer...he said that they used to program them, but now they come pre-programmed because GM didnt want to pay them to program the clusters...go figure... He said the OD lockout light is a software glitch in the new clusters and said the same thing about the oil press. As for the hour meter, you cant change it...which was a little frustrating because now the truck indicates about 200 hours LESS time than is actually on it. I thoght speedo shops could program the hours, no? About the heater performance option, he said he wasnt 100% sure, but he said it was most likely just a renamed high-idle.

Don't you just love it when you pay over 45 grand for your truck and when it needs to be repaired the dealer you bought it from DOSEN'T HAVE A COMPENTENT MECHANIC TO WORK ON IT!!!
Just burns the crap out of me.
I would tell the service manager to get the area rep on the phone a.s.a.p. to answer your questions, and quit talking to the mechanic, I am one and know how lazy they are.

When my truck was wrecked it needed some engine components replaced and the stealer I bought it from told me they didn't have any mechanics qualified to work on it? :banghead: :shake:

Consider yourself fortunate! I did not find out how incompetent my dealer's mechanics were until after they finished their "work".

Well I guess im lucky...Whenever my truck goes in for service, I always talk to the dealer's diesel technitian and hes a really nice guy and really seems to know his stuff... I just think theres lots of things that GM doesnt enlighten our dealers on. Im starting to think the problem is a little more GM than dealers. When it gets cold Ill have to recheck that heater performance thing.

I'll tell you about the "Stealer" in my area (Merle Stone Chevrolet in Tulare CA., don't go there)>
In '96 we bought a '96 Chevy S-10 Blazer for my wife, got all the bells and whistles, leather, c.d., the LT package you know...
The transmission started slipping around month 3, it slipped bad enough for the computer to throw an over-rev code on the engine. Took it in and they supposedly repaired it. A few weeks later, same thing, took it in and the tech scanned it in the service driveway and gave us crap about us going over 85 mph when it threw the code, I informed him the speedo went to 120 and if I so chose to go that fast it was none of his business. At that point I wanted a new tranny, but they told me it was under warranty and it had to be repaired. This went on for over three years. It seemed to spend more time in the shop, than in the garage and all they did was replace parts. I wanted to Lemon Law it, but my wife said it "had everything" and she was afraid of not getting the trim package she wanted, so I didn't push it to far.
The last time we had it in, the warranty was about to expire, again I requested a new tranny and they again refused and told me they would make this one work. I questioned the service manager about the warranty about to run out and my options when it did and he told me it had a "on-going" record of transmission problems and they would have to take care of it even when the warranty expired.
Well guess what, in Feb of 2001, while enrought to San Diego to take delivery of my new 2001 2500 hd, the tranny grenaded this side of Bakersfield. Had it towed to Merle Stone and guess what, they said we needed a new tranny, after the work was done I was presented with a bill of $2,400.00. I asked about the continuing problem clause the service manager told me about and was informed that manager was no longer employed with them. I took it to G.M. arbitration and all they did was lower the bill to half way, which was still $1,200 too much.
Major work, I'll do myself, the minor stuff like oil changes will get done at a 10 minute oil changer place.
I have seen the so called dealer shops in my area, and I would not want my diesel engine taken apart in such filthy conditions. These newer diesels almost need a clean-room enviroment to work on them, so when the time comes, I'll do it in my own shop.

I just bought a GMC that was a demo (6000 miles) ! After reading your post I was looking on my DIC and I have the "High Idle "option ! This truck is supposed to be an '05 ! On my VIN number if I start counting from the first number like 1VM.....to the eight one over to the right........it's a 2 !

I was screwing around changing the high idle on/off ...........and I didn't notice any difference .........what's it supposed to do ?

I didn't have any "heater performance" !

The High Idle feature is to help your truck warm up faster on very cold mornings...It will only work if the ambient Temp fallls pretty low and will shut itself off when the coolant temp reaches a certain temp. (Don't remember the exact range but it is in your owner's manual or in the Diesel suppliment section)

Heater performance was definetly not in there prior to the cluster swap so I [want to] think that its just a replacement for high idle...I guess ill just wait for the cold weather to come...and if the truck speeds up in park, then ill know!!! Can the programming be done with a Tech II?? I am seriously thinking of buying one because it seems we can never get the dealers to do exactly what we tell them...
