: Paint (clear-coat) problem?

I recently noticed on my 3yr old truck that on the hood only (I haven't seen it anywhere else yet), I have many hundreds probably thousands of small little 1/4" long raised scars in the paint. It almost looks like someone put a bunch of little pieces of straw on the hood and painted clear coat over it. These have not been there very long, and seem to be getting more of them as time goes on. What it looks like to me is the clear coat cracking. This vehicle has been garaged since the day I bought it and waxed regularly. Is this a common type of problem and/or what could this be? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,
Tim

I have an 03 that no longer fits in the garage and does not have any of the issues your experiencing. GM generally has really solid paint and clear coats applied this is not the norm. I have heard of similar instances on associates Fords which the stealer said was caused by rail dust. Which is apparently some fragmenst of rust/dust associated with freight carried on rail cars. Sounded like BS to me.

I took it to a body shop just to have them take a look at it before I take it to the dealer. I highly suspect the dealer will do nothing since it's 3yrs old and way out of warranty mileage-wise, but we'll see about that. There's no way they can say it's my fault and a factory paint job oughta last more than 3yrs I would think.

The body shop thinks the problem has to do with the primer adhering to the metal. He said it's definitely nothing to do w/ the clear coat but rather the problem is coming from underneath. It's also starting on the roof as well, so it's not just the hood.

He said it looks just like the problem GM had for about 10yrs or so where on certain vehicles for some reason the paint just starts coming off in sheets (you know what I'm talking about if you have ever seen it, there are plenty of GM trucks around here with that problem, esp white paint for some reason). My truck is not white though. Anyone had this problem besides me w/ a 2002 Chevy? Did your dealer take care of you? I am wondering if there is a TSB out on this?

My paint is falling off on my '02 CC right under the rear doors. Haven't been to the dealer about it yet.

I hope so, cause I fear it's the dreaded GM delamination problem where the paint literally peels off the primer. Time will tell, but I think it's time for a trip to dealer to get their input. :-(
