I recently took a trip to colorado and during that time did some minor off roading. Too my surprise, when I pushed to 4 low button (gear selector on N) my transfer case made some noises and went to 4 hi. In order for low range to engage or disengage, the truck had to be rolling slowly. In the past the transfer case would go into 4 low very quickly, without a problem.
Today I went to pull out a small stump:grd: and it took me several tries to get into 4 low.
Is it normal to have to be rolling slowly to get into or out of 4 low or is this a sign of a bigger problem?

While rolling slowly, I usually put the truck in neutral, then put it in 4LO. It seems to have less 'binding' on the gears with the trans. in neutral. I do the same when going back to 4HI/2HI.

It's kind of like shifting a manual transmission from 1 to R. Some times the gears line up and other times not. You can let out the clutch in neutral and roll things around for another try. Transmission in Neutral is the way that I do it. That way things can roll free. If it does not go, try moving a bit.
Thanks for the replies guys.
I guess I just won't worry about it and make sure I am slowly rolling in nuetral before selecting 4 low. I was just concerned because my truck used to go into 4low immediatly even when I was at a dead stop.
