OK, I have 94 6.5tb with auto trans, 4x4, k2500, and I think I should hook up a tranny cooler, do I connect to upper trans. line or lower trans line off radiator? I am towing 6500lb tractor and trailer together, and was thinking I should have some type of tranny cooler and not just using the rad. cooler.. am having overheating problems, just ordered the 97 cooling system upgrade, (waterpump and clutch fan by kennedy). so this should help a little..

Out a guage on it and check it first. My 95 with the BANKS kit and 97+ cooling mods never goes over about 210 in traffic 190 towing stock cooler. And yes I have towed with it, more than I probably should've:grd: about 9000 lbs worth with a 6.5 suburban, no problems.

Is there a place to mount a tranny temp gauge??

I built a manifold out of a brass tee and installed in the tranny cooler lines going up to the coolers(pre coolers) to get the hottest reading.

I ran mine from the lower radiator fitting to the cooler, then back to trans. The lower radiator fitting is return to trans line. I also plumbed the temp guage fitting into the cooler input. It reads after radiator, before cooler. I normally see 150º cruising on the highway, 180º chugging around stop and go. Haven't pulled the horse trailer yet.

If you want to be a real purist. Tenp coming out of the converter(pre cooler )will tell you how hard the torque converter is working. Temp coming out of the cooler tells you how efficient the cooler is but it does not tell the whole story. There is fluid being dumped in the pan that never sees the cooler and compromises temps some times. What you really want to know is what temp the fluid is that the pump is going to recuirculate back into the system from the sump.

I am running a Hayden cooler from the lower tranny line. Also, have a B&M gauge for each line so I know what's going out and then coming in. Major drop in temps after cooler install. Normal would run about 170 out and 160 in. Now am showing about 140 out and 120 in and that is 90+ degree ambient temp outside. Haven't towed since install but I had reached as high as 240 on a pull up a 6% grade, so it was a must for my truck. Running synthetic Amsoil fluid.
