: Aftermarket Allison program

from reading post on this forum it appears that the main differences between our 5-speed Allison transmissions and the '06 6-speeds is computer programming and some sort of tube ... just wondering if anyone is aware of any company working on a conversion kit that could convert ours to a 6-speed?

There has to be another gear involved?

From what I heard, the clutch packs are the same, just used in different combination to make the 6th gear. The difference is in the valve body and the programming.

Read this thread. It has lots of info on this subject:

That thread is a good read, but I don't think there's anything in there that addresses JEBar's question about programming the 3rd gen TCM with the 4th gen programming. If that was possible, it could make it marginally easier to add the 6th gear...

Maybe it was in a different thread then, because I remember reading about that particular issue somewhere in there. It is around somewhere though.

Think you guys need to give it up. I don't think it will happen, ever. It is possible and I don't see any kind of a kit going for under 2k plus install. Who is going to commit to developing a kit with maybe 5 max buyers?

Can't blame us for hoping... the transgo kit does miracles for 200$... maybe, just maybe it could be a simple solution. Do we have the report from ReverseEngeneering yet?

$2000  ... if that be the case I can well see it not being possible .... next question may be, if those of us with a 5 speed eventually need to have them rebuilt but Suncoast or others, wonder if they will be able to make moving to a 6 speed part of the rebuild?

Here's the problem you will face, IIRC:

You will need the 06+ calibration from a Tech2. You will not be able to program your LB7/LLY with a Tech2 using a 06 calibration.

However, if you find a donor 06 (test drive?), you can put a new TCM in it, reflash it to 06 spec, then put the stock TCM back in. Truck is still stock, and you have a 06 TCM in your possession.

Providing none of the wiring has changed, which it probably has. Not to mention it could use a new plug altogether.

Good point. You'd probably have to "customize" the connectors to get addition pins and hardwire them. I'll be really surprise if they use a different connector. They are the same for all Allison 1000-2400 trans.

What is the real difference ?????? If the internals are the same and ATS adds a solenoid valve for the Co-Pilot and a stand alone harness to control it who is to say that it can't be done.........ATS already has the aftermarket Allison Computer..........we have seen that you can add things to the Allison quite easily...........

What if the rumors are correct...........clutches are already in the transmission, programming is available for the 2006's..........so if there is a market and a need it will be filled by someone..........ATS, Suncoast........whoever...........I guarantee that for someone commuting on the highway with the cost of fuel if I could get 2-3 mpg more overall with a 6th gear I would be looking at it with a lot of enthusiasm...........especially if it is just a valve body swap...........and some programming..........

I for one think that some day we might see this as the 2006's are coming out and will be dissected more and more so we might get that 6th gear..........I HOPE..........:D

I'll second, third, fourth... and sixth ):h that notion! 2k is a hell of a lot less than the depreciation we've suffered due to GM employee pricing...

I thought that the 6 speed Alli had the same OD and just a smaller jump between gears. Right or wrong?

The 6 speed has exactly the same 5 gears as we have and a taller .61/1 ratio 6th gear which will lower rpm in 6th a few hundred more.........

It is just applying a different combination of clutches to make the 6th gear........

And also with the 4th gen TCM we could mayybbee get the tap-shift function!!
