: Converter lockup?
My stage five ats is a little over a month old and I have been messing around with 4wd launches. I've been taking off at 15 pounds of boost or a little more. I usually have the co-pilot set to the far right or in drag race mode. I'm not sure if my converter is behaving as it should or not.
Scenario 1
Tow haul mode on, converter doesn't lock until it shifts into 3rd gear. Is this normal? Will the converter not lock in second gear under heavy load? It feels like the converter slipping is slowing me down because the truck pulls alot harder once it hits 3rd gear and is locked up.
Scenario 2
Tow haul mode off, converter didn't lock until I hit the to haul mode button somewhere in 4th gear. The rpm's stayed above 3,000 most of the run and it felt like chit without lockup.

No are you sure? What sub level? I can feel the converter lock in 2nd in T/H without the Co-Pilot on
Scenario 2
Sounds right to me. The Allison must be in T/H for early TC lock up.Otherwise it wont happen untill OD in regular mode
Under moderate throttle the converter will lock up in second with tow haul mode on. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure it isn't with a boosted launch.
As far as the non tow/haul lockup goes, I thought that the converter was supposed to lock under heavy throttle regardless of whether or not tow/haul was on or not. Under moderate to heavy throttle it will lock up in normal mode, but not with a boosted launch.
ratlover 08-16-2005, 10:18 AM the 1-3 happens so fast are ya sure?
You are able to not break traction in a 4x4 launch with 15 psi? or is that with slicks or what?
Mike L. 08-16-2005, 10:27 AM Put a Tech 2 on it ( best to have someone riding shotgun and watching screen) and see what is really going on.

I'm not positive, it could be locking at the very end of second gear. I just thought I should be able to feel it. Maybe it just happens too quickly.
As far as the 15 psi launch goes, no it doesn't break traction. Keep in mind I have H2 wheels/tires (315/70/r17). Sometimes I can feel a slight slip, but for the most part the truck just takes off. This is also done with 8 cranks to the torsion bars:badidea:

I wish I knew someone with access to a tech 2. I'm not exactly sure how I would swing that.
What about when the truck isn't in tow haul mode. I thought the converter should lock under full throttle part way through 2nd all the way through 5th.
ratlover 08-16-2005, 02:00 PM The next diesel drag up in WI would be a good place to borrow one. ;) End of this month, fun time too. Wi Huck(of huckstorf diesel) has one and brings it. His shop and the track is right over the boarder
Mike L. 08-16-2005, 03:10 PM In the O/D position, wide open throttle, the converter will lock at the top of 2nd gear.
Kennedy 08-17-2005, 10:55 AM Things happen so fast here that it is hard to determine by visual observation what is happening. The Edge Attitude is a good indicator of TCC lock also. Allison commanded TCC lock is based on output shaft speed just like the shifts. This falls around 22mph give or take a few. Now the Copilot is supposed to force TCC apply based on boost, but it's not quite clear to me exactly when this occurs. I've always understood that the green light indicates Copilot TCC force on.

Sounds like a good time. Can you tell me the exact date and location so I can plan ahead.
