I took a chance and put my used 91 6.2L in my 82 suburban. I sealed it up and threw it in. I was on a very tight time schedual. Got it running by 1:00 am and had it all put together by 7:00 am. When I took it for a test drive I noticed heavy white smoke from the right bank on acceleration and a little at idle. My guess is that I'm burning coolant. I never had time to check it before I left for college. Possibly a blown head gasket?

Before making any condemnations, take it out and run it hard, get it hot, work the engine good with numerous full throttle runs. You might also give it a good dose of injector cleaner to loosen things up a little.
If this does not net an improvement, try changing the injection pump timing. Next would be to check the radiator for bubbles with the engine idling. Let me know what you find.;)

Be sure to use the diesel injector cleaner as a lot of the gasoline injector cleaners are alchol based.

You could be right the engine may have sat for ten years give or take. I swapped the injectors out of my old engine, but I was working in dusty conditions. Could have got some dirt in the lines. I do know that all of the cylinders are hitting. Some sound like they drop the rpm more than others when I crack the lines. I do think that the timming could be off a little. It starts fine but runs rough, esspecialy on acceleration and at certian rpm ranges.
I should mention that the engine was turboed years ago. As the story goes the owner said it didn't have enough power and complained of white smoke on start up so he pulled it out and put in a 454. That is what made me wonder about the head gasket.
I also wonder if the fuel pump was turned up when it was turboed. I watched the exhaust when I was driving it and it doesn't make a lot of black smoke like it's getting too much fuel. I would like to check it anyway but don't know how to adjust the fuel and don't know where the stock setting should be.

You'll never get to stock setting on the injection pump unless you pull it and have it recalibrated.
Heavy white smoke out of one bank, from idle all the way up. That doesn't sound good. But it does narrow it down to head/head gasket/injector problem. Normally an injector thats hung won't give heavy white smoke. How does it smell? Like burnt Coolant? Sweet like oil burning? Or sour, bring tears to your eyes like diesel?

I thought it smelled like diesel for sure. That's what's throughing me off a little.
If I'm burning antifreeze, is it harmful to run it this way?

If your burning antifreeze, then no its not safe. It can dilute your oil and eat your bearings, damage your pistons and overheat the engine.
Pretty much whatever the white smoke is, if its heavy, its best not to operate the engine except to try and diagnose the problem. Crack the injector lines on the smokey bank and see if one of them clears it up, then maybe you can atleast narrow it down to a cylinder.

you could run some clear tubing from the front injector to the hard returnline may have some air, I had similar symtoms and it turned out to be a hairline crack in the piston, check the blowby I had clouds of smoke out the oil fill!!
