I have a bit of radial play when I shake [@ 3&9] my rear wheels with the truck on jack stands. I was asked if I have a "full floating" rear end, which it would be normal. I don't know so here is what I can tell ya'll, though I have not removed the rear diff cover;
The truck has 46,000 miles on it.
The diff cover has 14 bolts.
The rear axle code is GQ1 "Standard Ratio".
Tranny code is MM4 "4 speed" with a 208NP transfer case.
The chassis code is C6P "hd chassis--8600lbs".

I thank you,

Scot

I had an '86 Chevy with the C6P package and it had a semi-floating rear axle. The way you can tell a full floater is to look at the axle cap...a full floater has 8-10 bolts (don't remember the exact number off the top of my head) holding it into the axle tubing.

Good luck!

I have been told it's a 14 bolt, 9.5" semi floating. After I got the wheels off, I found out I could pull the axle in & out a few millimeters, but no "side to side" play.

which 3/4 ton trucks had full floaters on them then? whats was the gvwr/rear axle weight rating?? if he has 8600 gvwr(C6P) with a gm14 bolt semi wouldnt the f/f on a 3/4ton push it into the 1ton series gvwr (9000+lbs)?

By the way, if you wanted to know, your "GQ1" rear axle code seems to be coming up as 3.73:1 ratio for your specified 6.2L truck.
