: Locking Hitch Pin
dmax_83 02-07-2011, 10:00 PM I have a 2011 coming soon and I can not seem to find a locking hitch pin that will fit. Every one that I find on etrailer or amazon says that I will not work with the new hitches gm is using on these new trucks. I searched here with no luck, does anyone have a 2011 and a locking hitch pin?

greif03lb7 02-07-2011, 11:09 PM is wis that bad?
dmax_83 02-07-2011, 11:18 PM greif, WI isn't that bad, I have just always had one and I guess I just prefer the ease of mind. It is my opinion that $25 of prevention is better than my wd setup walking away. I don't have to make it theft proof, I just have to make it harder to steal than my neighbors hitch :)
1tonchev, I checked them out and half of them list that they won't work with the receiver and the other half don't list anything.
I'm thinking that I might have to wait until my truck arrives and measure that actual pin area before I buy one.
Dirt_Farmer 02-08-2011, 01:47 PM Just a FYI, if you have the backup sensors you won't want to leave your hitch in. It "sees" the hitch and beeps at you in reverse until it disables itself. So you might not need the lock if your hitch is always in the bed.

dmax_83 02-09-2011, 12:05 AM Jeff - I didn't realize that the hitch would interfere with the backup sensors! I might just remove the hitch when I get to my campsite.
05 duramax - Thanks, that is pretty cool. I didn't even know that that company existed.
chargeit 02-09-2011, 03:35 PM You just need to find a hitch pin that works with a 2.5 inch receiver unless there is something very special about the 2011 hitch specifically?
As to the hitch interfering with a backup sensor, that is hitch dependant too.
I have a DiversiTech drop hitch and pin. Locking pin is long enough to pass though reciever and sleeve or if you are getting a DT hitch, simply get their 2.5 hitch w internal locking pin.
Sensor does not pickup the hitch as long as it is down 2-3 inches or so. (I use it at that level or an inch lower most of the time unless there is something exceptional about the tow) Stock suspension.

That's what I thought too, but I have seen reviews for the common pins that fit the 07-10's and they say that they don't work for the 11's.
I called a company called Lifelong locks today and they told me that their longest pin should fit just fine. It looks to be pretty good quality.
dmax_83 02-10-2011, 04:39 PM Thanks for the replys, this is forum is a great resource.
For anyone else looking for one, I emailed etrailer and they suggested this one would fit just fine: http://www.etrailer.com/Locks,Hitch-Accessories/DeadBolt/RH5-XL.html

I got a locking one at Lowes hardware. It fits that 2.5 opening.

IIRC the '11 hitch has additional plates added on each side of the pin hole. This makes the hitch walls thicker, thus needing a longer pin than the standard '07-'10 2.5" hitch.
dmax_83 02-16-2011, 01:38 AM ^^^From the pics I've seen of the new 2011 hitches, they are different from the 07-10's^^^
Drumaniac3000 02-16-2011, 09:41 PM FYI, the '11 hitch is 3.5" outside to outside with the gusset plate. There is a counterbore around the hitch pin hole but I doubt it has much affect on the necessary pin length.
adamguy2006 02-16-2011, 09:52 PM If I'm reading this right in 07 they went from a 2" to a 2 1/2" receiver, and now they have added an additional gusset around the pin hole?

Thanks, that is extremely helpful!

Yup, still a 2.5" opening but more metal added around the pin hole.
Dragon 02-19-2011, 08:31 PM If you just want to make it harder to get then your neighbor's, you could drill the hole out a little in the original pin and put a small padlock on it. I did that on mine and it works fine. I got a set of 4 keyed alike Master Lock locks and use them for the hitch and the chain I put around the battery cover on my bike trailer, among other things.
Edit: This thread shows the locks...and no, that's NOT my truck ):h

PLM-1 02-20-2011, 12:52 AM I've got the "long" Trimax in stainless steel. I had to grind off the locking head a bit around the bottom so it would lock. The '11 hitch is indeed wider with that extra plate around it.
