: Pemex Diesel
RudyRodriguez 08-15-2005, 01:34 AM first of all I'd like to say hello to all the fellow dmax owners out there. Also, I'd like to say I live in Yuma Az and have used Pemex diesel for about three tanks now and havent noticed any difference. Thanks to rising diesel prices here in the states, I have resorted to fuel across the border. Pemex diesel is about 50 cents a litre, which is roughly 2 bucks a gallon, now I think thats a purdy good deal. Would appreciate input if any. Thanks, Rudy R
I think the only concern might be sulfur level if you had catalyst in the exhaust.
RudyRodriguez 08-15-2005, 08:58 PM Im not too sure on what you mean by that. What should I be looking out for? And what sort of damage can sulfur levels do to my truck?
michael nelson 08-15-2005, 09:04 PM on my gas cap it states low sulfur diesel only.btw;i live near the border also, and i would'nt use anything mexico has to offer in the way of fuel for any of my vehicles!jmo-michael....you are giving up your freedom every time you cross the border,to me not worth the risk!
RonJT 08-16-2005, 03:31 AM A lot of what Pemex has to sell...especially near the border comes from us...mainly california refineries.
Since california brews low sulfur fuel...they produce fuel that will not meet the one of umpteen different specs for the state...so they ship out the out of spec fuel to other states or Mexico's Pemex. From what I understand..Mexico has their own refinery problems so they have to import refined product.
The only problem with Pemex is the sulfur...which would probably be a problem in EGR equipped trucks if used all the time.
I have used Pemex fuel on a trip to Baja/Cabo and upon my return replaced filters to see what kind of crap was in there...granted 2k miles only but they were brand new.
speedracer 08-17-2005, 03:20 PM Just bought Diesel in Rosarito over the weekend, thought it seemed like a good deal. But when dealing with a Local on some Pottery I was buying, I made the comment that at least your fuel is cheap, then He said "yeah but its crap" made me start to worry, have a secondary filter and only bought $20 worth, but it is something to think about.
Haydn 08-17-2005, 04:06 PM Have 2003 Chev 2500HD DA. I spend every winter in Mexico and have driven thousands of miles in Mexico pulling a fiver and solo. There are many other people using diesel engines including very expensive motor homes. We see transports from the US using Pemex fuel. I have never had a problem with diesel fuel and have never ever heard of any problem with Pemex fuel, diesel or gasoline.
speedracer 08-17-2005, 08:07 PM Good to hear! :)
LBZrcks 08-17-2005, 08:54 PM Never had a problem with PEMEX diesel either, parents have a vacation house in ensenda. I only buy from the bigger newer staions though, not the small ones.

RonJT 08-17-2005, 09:03 PM The "crap fuel" he is probably talking about is the gasoline....in that regards it is truly bad stuff...but diesel is another story.

I have heard of the watered down gasoline but that was years ago, wouldn't run the nova gasoline especially since it means "no go" in spanish.

Nacho05 08-17-2005, 09:37 PM Nova gasoline was leaded, which was a huge problem with cars equipped with catalytic converters. All of their gasoline is now unleaded--NovaSin(sin=without "lead) 87 octane and Magna 93 octane. I have driven 1500 miles south (Guadalajara & Puerto Vallarta)into Mexico without problems on fuel injected gas engines. My brother made a trip in his '03 LB7 using Pemex diesel without a hiccup.
RudyRodriguez 08-18-2005, 12:51 AM I'd like to thank all the great replies, if there are any more with similar experiences, I'd like to hear them, Again,,, THANKS
Kampzite 08-18-2005, 12:54 AM May be the time to visit the Folks in San Diego, and make a side trip to Tijuana and fill er up with pemex.
Kendall69 08-18-2005, 01:18 AM Since, kidnapping has become Mexico's primary National product, and the cops and Military are all on the take, paying an extra buck a gallon is cheap insurance. Oh and speaking of insurance how much would you save if you purchace Mexican insurance
( which is a must ) every time you go down.
Personnaly I donn't care how many times people have gone down there safe, it's a cess pool - no thanks.
And if you live in San Diego how much will you save by driving down there, waiting in line two hours to get back, and drice back.
My time is worth a WHOLE lot mor than $30.00 for a half day of driving and waiting.
Nacho05 08-18-2005, 01:38 AM ):h I guess "Man on Fire" made an impression on many people.):h
BuckeyeQuicky 08-18-2005, 02:52 AM I frequent an RV site and I have read some post from RV'er who winter in Mexico that they and quite a few others have picked up some bad fuel this past winter for the first time after traveling down there for many years, most of those reporting claim that they got it from the smaller out of the way stations in Mexico with some being the same station located near a popular RV park, so its not a wide spread thing, no one reported any bad fuel from the bigger newer Pemex stations that were also used a lot by the big trucks which is where I would buy.
Sidebite252 08-18-2005, 05:43 AM Man I've worked in Mexico on Pemex projects - I wouldn't start a brush fire with this junk. I don't think it is transported across the border from the US. Pemex can put it to the pump for much cheaper than they can purchase the stuff here in the US. I'm almost certain the sulfur content is much higher. Good luck using this stuff. I hope I'm wrong.
gardnerteam 08-18-2005, 09:12 AM Been using Pemex diesel since 1982. For the last 10 years or so been driving about 25,000 miles a year in Mexico, Belize, & Guatemala. No problems in my 6.2's, 6.5 Turbos or the two D/A's I've been running down there. I use 100 gal aux tanks, fill at large truck stops most of the time (except in Guatemala, where there are basically only stations like US), and run dual filters. In all those years, only two bad loads of fuel, and both were from small low volume isolated stations. Sulfur content is high, and I change my oil as soon as I cross back into the US, and again in 1500 miles. I also use a lubrication additive and a cetane booster.
txguppy 08-18-2005, 11:23 PM Back during the GM converted Diesel days, people were buying Pemex diesel and ruining their engines. Seems there was high parrafin levels in the fuel. I know that was a long time ago, but every day I see lots of MX Cargo trucks filling-up on our side instead of in MX.
Italian Stallion 08-25-2005, 12:49 AM I used to own a 1996 Cummins when I had a furniture store in RockyPoint Mexico and as you can imagine, I was in and out of Mexico at least 4 days a week and I never had a problem with Pemex. I later traded it for a 2000 GMC 6.5 TD... I know I know...but never had any problems with that either. My parents have lived there now for 10 years and they own a 97 Cummins and have never had any problems. Hope this helps.
