I'm looking for a winch for my '08 2500HD. I am really torn between Warn and Smittybilt. I have also found some pretty smoking deals on the models with built-in air compressors. The truck weighs right under 8K.
Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Harbor Freight and look at their winches. Sometimes Warn will everproduce or something, and will sell their extra winches to other companies who will take the badge off and repaint it. But if you look on the bottom of the winch, they will still have Warn Hub stamped into the bottum of them

Thanks! Any idea which ones those might be?

I found a smokin' deal on a Smitty 12K. I had a Smitty on my Jeep way back when. I will post pics of the install.

General rule of thumb is that your winch pulling capacity needs to be 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. So it looks like a 12k is the minimum for you. I have owned 2 warns, and have friends with mile markers and ramseys. I would definitely save your money to get a Warn, although I'm not familiar with the "on board air" options available.
Don't forget you double your pulling capacity with the use of snatch blocks, and look into synthetic line if you're going to be using it a lot.

Thanks. I picked up a snatch so I can get a 2:1 on it. I hope it holds up. So far the only issue I've found people have with it is the conrol housing is not sealed. That's an easy fix.

I have a milemarker in my truck and like it. I have yet to use my 12K but have also have two other 3K milemarkers that have never let me down. I just could not see spending that much money on a WARN, but that is me. All are good winches listed above.

No idea. I called Warn about a Winch and the guy on the other side told me that. But I have't been able to check it out yet

I have the smittybilt xrc 10. That is the 10000 lbs winch. With the block it doubles the pull so i would think 10000 would be plenty.

I got the Smitty 12K for under $400 BNIB. I was going to order the Warn because it's made here and you can replace the motors if they go out. Then I found the motors to cost well over what I paid for the whole Smitty 12K.

Thats why I bought my Milemarker, I think it was between 450 and 500 dollars, and the warn was like 1500 or so.
