Hey every one. We have been lucky to find a Kawasaki side by side that needs some TLC. Its been abandon for some time but after about a hour and some cleaning up we got the glow plugs to start cycling and the starter cranking. We are getting pressure to the injectors and it seams like she is trying to crank over. One thing i have noticed is that the fuel thats in the lines is probably 1-2 years old since thats the amount of time its been sitting. I was thinking of dumping the tank and taking air to purge the lines the best we can to and adding new fuel. I have also considered pulling the injectors and trying to soak them in some type of fluid. (JP8) is what the military uses in place of diesel fuel would probably be my first choice but i dont know if it would actually clean them or not. I wish we had some diesel 911 or something like that but we are very limited and only have basics (mo gas, JB8, brake cleaner, WD40, basic oil's, etc).

If any one has any ideas or has played with something like this before please i am all ears. Its the rainy season right now and we have mud up to our ankles so having a little beat around side by side would be perfect for moving light loads and things of that nature.

If i have some time to play with her today i may add some pics :D.

And yes i know this is not a GM diesel but we do deal with the HMMWV and CUCV which use the GM 6.2 and 6.5 as well as a few civilian unarmored vehicles that sport 8.1 gassers and of course a few good old LBZ and LLM trucks.

If diesel has been sitting in it for 1-2 years I'd clean the lines/ new filter/ and clean the tank out and then fill it with fresh diesel or JP8. There's probably mold in the tank for it sitting that long without doing anything with it.

Got her up and running today... Well sort of. Changed the oil and dumped out all the old fuel we also found a new oil filter and fuel filter. We pulled the injector lines and cleaned the injectors. And after a little wiring (the ignition was missing) and a lot of cranking she fired up. Over all she seams to be running good but i am a little worried about the lack of lubrication in JP8 since its made to run on diesel. We have a little more work to do before we can start using her (brakes dont work to well) so i am having my wife send some diesel supplement and a new air filter so she is not just sucking dust.

Mix 4 oz. of 2 cycle oil or ATF in the fuel to help lube and clean the lines more injectors will like it if you do it all the time. Play with the amount you add to just see what it likes. Cheap adder for the way it smooths out flows.

Throw some good ol' 30W in there. Just a few ounces per tank. Our FSR almost had a heart attack when he caught us doing that old school ATF stuff. The friction modifiers in modern ATF is not friendly according to the guy that maintained a large fleet of $1M+ MRAPs.

30W will mix with the JP8 and will not clog the injectors?

Yes. You just use very little. We ran it in the new C7s for over a year without a hiccup. You could go 10w I suppose but our FSR advised not to use multi-viscosity and 30w should be plentiful.

We do have a good supply of 30W and of course 15/40. Thanks for the advice. What is considered a little 1 oz per gallon?

Try that out and see how it runs. That's 128:1 and most people 2-stroke at that ratio. You could half; 256:1, if you are worried.

Added about 3 oz to a 4 gallon tank and she seams to be doing very well with it. I notice a little less noise and maybe just a little black smoke when you first steep on it. We gave her a new paint job today ;) so if i can find some one with a digital camera we will get some pics.

JP8 has plenty on lubrication. The mil-spec calls for a maximum of 3000ppm sulfer. You don't need any additives unless you are up in northern Iraq where it gets really cold. Even then, if it a mechanical injection pump, ethyl alcohol works well in JP8 @ 400:1.

I was under the impression that JP8 has very little lubrication versus normal diesel. I remember JP4 was a different story.

JP8 is hydrogen treated kerosene distillate(ULSD is treated same way) and oxygenated to prevent coking/black smoke emitted from aircraft exhaust. JP4 had gasoline added to it, hence lower flashpoint, JP4/8 needed for high speed/altitude turbine flameout prevention and restart on old turbines. Early on in iraq the troops suffered injection system failures from JP5/8, maint. started to add atf,eng oil. the army motor vehicle command has instruction from testing. any aircraft, JPX requires additional lube due to lack of lube in that type of fuel.

Yes when it gets hot we will see about one injections pump fail a week. Of course the typical life of a 6.2/6.5 in a M1151 is about 15-20K if you are lucky.

Well its been hot for about 2 months now. Only had a few engines and a few IP's go this year. Averaging about 1 major component fail a week which is not too bad. The big thing this year has been the ISX cummins in the MRAP RG33 Plus. That thing is supposed to be a beast and we have replaced 3 engines and 5 turbo's in the last 3 months. Most of those trucks have below 15,000 miles on them.

Got her running pretty good. Fresh tan paint job and some little touches ;). We have been adding dextron IV but in very small amounts. Also picked up a turbo off of a little generator that we have been installing over the last few days when the bay is slow. Nothing pretty but we will see how it works out. Before she wold run 25 mph on flat ground and about 22 up most of the hills. This was taken off of her speedo so it should give us a good judge any improvement

Over all i have been very impressed with the mule. We have hooked her to a gator 4x6 and a gas powered polaris 6x6 and she has some how come out on top both times. The polaris is of course much faster but the mule seems to grab a lot better in low gear and gets the power to the ground.

They are not very sporty but they make one hell of a work horse.

Got her running today with the turbo. Still have a few issues to work out and some fine tuning but not too bad. Its a very small none wastegated unit that seems to be a little small for the mule. I have not turned up the fuel any but i did notice what seems to be a decent increase in mid range power. On the road she picked up about 3 mph on the hills.

The oil supply line is leaking a little big so i need to do something about that, The exhaust looks like crap so i might try to touch it up a little,
