While returning with my new engine about 1/2 way (250km's) into the journey my tach decided to go wonky, now it just bounces every now and again off of 0 to maybe 1000 rpm? Checked the wires and plug on it, all appears ok.:help2:

CR,
Check the wires at the alternator. I had that happen last week and it was from when I was under the hood mucking around with my 97 cooling mod.
Glad to see you up and running.. crappy way to spend a vacation.

I did check the wiring at the alternator........ and then i started to follow them back from there......
What a friggen MESS!!!!!!!!!!! Its melted everywhere back through the harness so far... what the hell! They must have pinched something somewhere...... where does it friggen end!!!!

Is it just the alternator wires that are fried?
I guess you'll be giving DAS a call soon..

I'll have pics in a bit, harness melted from inside the alternator connector all the way back to the bracket that holds the wastegate selonoid. I'm just taking the covers off back there to see if it goes any further. Appears the harness was hooked under the bracket and wore a hole through it. Stupid thing is i didn't have that bracket on there, they added one to hold the waste gate selonoid, i just had it wired back before the engine job to keep out of the way.
Pins on the alternator are also pooched!!! Can i run it with the plug off the alternator once i get the wires figured out?

Is the connector on your alternator not the grey one thats identical to the connector for the Fuel Solenoid harness on the pump?? Do you have a spare one you can use?
IIRC, its the same 4 pin connector, but only 2 pins are used.

No, i only have a spare PMD with me. I'll add pics to this post in a couple mins after i resize them.

Well that was dumb, i could only edit 15 minutes after the original post so i had to do it all over again.

Pics
It appears at this point the wiring hasn't burnt beyond what the picture shows, i sure hope it doesn't go further, just looks like it burnt to where it was shorting on the bracket. Once again, can i run it without the wires hooked to the bottom of the alternator and if so what will it effect?

Ouch, I guess you won't have a choice but to run with it unplugged for a little while.
I don't know what those two wires go to. Tach, Voltmeter, ECM for IGN Voltage readout???

All fixed as best as can be done without proper parts and connectors. Picked up a new alternator because the pin was melted out of the back of it and there was some melting on the inside of it. Should be good for 100,000 but i'll probably get the proper stuff when i get back home for it. I sure hope the short wasn't further back in the harness!
BTW those two wires are for the voltage regulator, dunno how it works so don't ask me, only the white one was crispy!
Now i have other grief with codes for my glow plug controler, dunno if i can do anything about that or not, something to do with the new timer because of the quick/high heats, i'll address it on another thread.
