We've gotten into the high 2.60's here in southeastern Idaho - only a few cents shy of 2.70 now.

The other thing that drives up fuel prices in Ca is the designer fuel they have to use.

Funny...I do not remember asking anyone for their tears concerning fuel prices in California.

Just remember midwest folks..come 2006 everyone is using the same fuel...10-15ppm sulfur fuel.

Considering fuel prices lately have been tied to refinery shutdowns/fires etc...It will be interesting to see what happens when everyone is using the same fuel...what kind of excuses for high fuel prices will be heard.

Sorry, didn't intend to offend the clan with the tan. Just checked a web site for the local supplier. It's as follows: diesel; premium high sulfur-$2.05; dyed low sulfur-$2.05; soy biodiesel $2.07(my favorite); low sulfur (taxed) $2.40; unleaded gas-$2.35; gas 10% ethenol-$2.28.E-85(85% ethenol) is around $1.98 but I couldn't find an exact quote. And don't tell me you can't use an e-10, i've been using it for 20 years in every thing from cars to chain saws.

Well, actually *Florida* is my home, I have a house in West Palm Beach and maintain Florida residency, tags and license. I'm a consulting engineer and work sub-contracts in the nuclear industry. I was in Ohio doing a decommissioning project on a NASA research reactor. That ended in February and now I'm in Idaho doing a conduct of operations program improvement at the DOE Idaho National Lab since eary April.

Could someone tell me. How a refinery shutdown would cause a barrel of crude to go up in price.

Could someone tell me. How a refinery shutdown would cause a barrel of crude to go up in price.

You are absolutely correct that this is totally irrational. If refining capacity is in short supply, that means that crude cannot all be processed, and it will start to build up in inventory, lowering its price.

On the other hand, a shortage of refining capacity could cause inventories of refined products to dwindle, thereby causing a price spike in refined products, but not crude.

I think this all shows that speculation, and not supply and demand, is driving many of these price gyrations.

With the demmand for diesel going up I wouldn't be surprised if the inflatuionary cost isn't going up also. Very soon were gooing to be waiting line at the diesel pumps right along with the new sieries of diesel cars.Maybe SAMS or some of those other biggies will form a co-op to offer us better prices.

YEP, $3.19 in San Jose......Yippe Yahoooo....Gotta love it...What a F Censored N scam. I am not sure what to think anymore. I am not into politics at all, But at the risk of being flamed on here, It is quite apparent that foreign oil people do not care much for our President. I think in a very subtle way they are slowly getting back at us. then you add the local refineries saying "Yeah lets hit them hard and make wicked profit".

Still not given my truck up and the oil people both here and on foreign land know this...:exactly: So what do companies do when it is the ol addage "What the market will bear"...well what will it bear?...$4...$5

Just my $3.19 worth....

Fuel prices are yet another example of "depends on how you look at it" type thing: After adjusting for inflation, they're still below historic highs....

I'm glad I don't have my previous two Chevy's both of which had 454's....mileage was 1/2 what my DuraMax gets (either bare or towing, it's still twice what the gasser got).

In other countries gasoline and diesel are way, way higher than here. Hard to believe diesel was below a dollar and not too long ago....

It's a supply and demand type thing, when supplies are plentiful and/or demand goes down, price will too.

NCal,
Oh I agree. sadly for most, salaries are not going up at the rate inflation is. Some people recently got small salary increases but that will be consumed by the gas increase.
I had a 93 and 96 gas dually. and you are right. I double their MPG...Still love the truck and will not part with it. I just find myself not going 80 all the time...I am now down to 65...has helped MPG by 1-2 mpg

Duramax Dually:

I hear you. My commute is only about 2 miles :), but I know of lots of commutes in the 50 mile range, and even some much much farther....[one guy commutes from Reno, NV to Sacramento, CA].....higher fuel pricing smacks some people much harder than others, even when our trucks are gettin' great mileage (relatively speaking).

I have the impression that there are lots more long commutes for Californians than is typical in other places.

This latest fuel price jump just seemed to come out of "nowhere"

Hey, I just got my new Discover card. It pays me up to 5% back on fuel purchases, 10% if you use your rebate at an affiliated retailer. Here's the link:

I think they get along fine. Recall the pic of Bush and the Saudi holding hands a while back? They are good buds.

If we are looking for someone to blame, look at our fellow Americans who believe that cheap fuel is a God Given Right.

Further, look at people who have bought goods that were not made in the US. We have kicked off the economies and middle classes of India and China. They now have $$, and are in the process of industrialization. This takes oil.

In other countries, fuel prices are way higher because their gorernment taxes the hell out of them. I saw a news article a few months ago and if all taxes were removed, the U.S. pays about .50 per gallon more on the average for fuel.

as I noted in another thread, I have ordered a 98 gallon in bed tank from Transfer Flow for our truck ... it is expensive and I know that no matter how much I am save on purchasing fuel, I will never pay for it in savings ... NC has a very high tax on fuel and it is my firm desire to buy all the fuel I can while out of state in order to keep every penny of fuel tax possible out of Raleigh ... the shame of it is, as others have noted, other than buying cheaper vehicles and cutting way back on miles driven there really isn't much we can do:rant:

$2.72 yesterday in Kadoka, SD (good luck finding that on a map), and a little less when I got back to Rapid City. Even those of us in the rural areas are getting pinched... Although, the Sturgis bike rally was wrapping up over the weekend so the price gougers have been out in full force in our neck of the woods.

FYI, on that Discover Card deal you only get the 5% up to a total of $1500 in fuel purchases a year, after which it steps down to 3% and then 1% depending on how much you spend.

I use a Conoco/Phillips66/76 card that gives 3% on all purchases with those stations... Driving between 20 and 30k miles annually, it saves me about a hundred bucks a year. Between the two cards, the overall annual savings would probably come out about the same if you spent over the $1500; under $1500 the Discover card would obviously be a better deal. I like the added measure of satisfaction I get knowing that the Conoco companies are not using any oil from Saudi Arabia.

...Wishing I had the space to run a home-brew WVO bio refinery right about now.

ON EDIT: Freaky, the two SD guys chime in within seconds of each other...
