I was involded in a discussion about the dodge ecm for a cummins. There was an accident involving a dodge pickup(2004ish) and a car (impala I think) in which the passagers of the car were killed. The rumor is the police toed the vehicle to a repair shop to have the ECM's pulled out to see the speed of the vehicles at the time of the reck. Will the ECM have that data?

ECM no, airbag module YES. DODGE has had data recorders in there airbag modules since about 97 that record just about everything over the data bus for 45 seconds before airbag deployment. Not many people know this, but they did it due to all of the lawsuits they were getting from people saying the ABS or such didn't function properly and caused there accident.

pretty much every vehicle equipped with airbags (regardless of mfg) since the mid 1990's has some form of event data recording, for the reasons mentioned above by Fermanator
