: Weight removal
noreaster 08-14-2005, 03:31 AM I'm just starting this to see what ideas are out there, you could say this is for general knowledge for everybody wanting to do it down the road.
I remember a thread by Tomac about how to get a Dmax go 10 seconds, it had some weight removal ideas in it, this is kinda a modern version to fit next years possible rule changes.
With DHRA supposedly dropping the weights next year in Pro Street, 5000lbs.-all motor, 5500lbs.-1 power adder & 6200lbs.-2 power adders same as before.
I know a RC 4X4 can get to 6000lbs, what would work to cut it 5500lbs?
I say cut it, cause that's the easy way to remove weight, obvisously.
Here's what I can think of off the of my head.
From the rules, the only lightweight replacement body parts are fiberglass hood & fenders, if you could find glass fenders.
The fuel tank is an idea, goto a 8 or a 10gal. in the bed.
Maybe this will get the gears working for some of ya.
ratlover 08-15-2005, 11:19 AM The plow mounts/tool box/headache rack would be a good start for me :D
Normal stuff in a race car. Gut it, lite weight glass, lite wieght wheels, glass body pannles(like bed, bumpers too)
I think a reg cab could hit 6k with driver easy just removing stuff like skidplates and interior without spending any $$$.
gmccall 08-15-2005, 06:55 PM here is some info:
Westin foot rails - 24 lbs each side
spare tire (265s) - 75 lbs
tail gate - 55 lbs
IdahoRob 08-15-2005, 07:42 PM Rear seats weight a ton. I looked at them and thought they wouldn't weight much. I removed them once and figure they weight 150lbs.

Would never have guessed. How much trouble is it to remove the seats ?
noreaster 08-15-2005, 09:55 PM Here's an experiment for somebody if their bored, see how much an 8ft. bed weighs with line-x in it, compared to just factory paint?
Here's a few more,
remove the mech. fan & replace with electric
move battery to under the bed
from the looks of it, 01 Chevy bumper looks like it has less metal to it
acid dip bumper or get a fiberglass & paint or chrome coat it, like factory grill
probably the best way to cut weight from front end & overall weight would be rip out AC, not something you want to do to a daily driver.
Anybody know how much the AC system weighs?

So what would acid dipping do for you? Just to peel off the chrome? Whats that going to gain you a couple 4-5 lbs? Just curious...
noreaster 08-15-2005, 10:22 PM It will eat the chrome off & lose some weight at a short dip, longer dip can eat off enough to cut the weight in 1/2. To find out when is enough & not too much, you need to experiment with same material first. Probably find a junkyard bumper to try it on.
I haven't seen a fiberglass replacement yet, plus DHRA PS rules state only hood & fenders can be lightweight replacement.

i helped my dad put seats in his 04 crew cab and it was fairly easy.
probably a 20 minute job or less
just a few bolts i think a couple brackets and the seat belts
Ah and one more thing. THEY ARE VERY HEAVY):h
stroker1 08-15-2005, 11:05 PM iirc rhino lining weighs ~10 lbs per mixed gallon and it takes anywhere from 5 -7 gallons to do a truck bed. ya i know im in the wrong forum!

 Maybe I won't have Big Blue sprayed after all.

Not bad with an impact gun. I seperated the two and removed. Maybe 15min.
I'll most likely just do the tailgate/spare from know on, unless I have alot more time before a race.
ratlover 08-16-2005, 10:43 AM I would assume it lightens up a bit after its dried......or is that dried?
stroker1 08-16-2005, 06:27 PM maybe a couple of lbs lighter, imo not enough to matter.

Morse 08-16-2005, 10:13 PM As Noreaster stated, you can only run a fiberglass hood and fenders.. You can remove a battery.. Replace your front bumper with a bumper cover, replace bed with a very light duty aluminum one, or remove the floor of the bed.. Ligtweight seats.. Shorten your truck, and make it a shortbed... Wheels & tires will surprise you.. Gut it.. I couldn't gut mine or remove the ac, though I don't mind chopping up the outside..
noreaster 08-17-2005, 12:14 AM I could see why you wouldn't want to remove the AC being in Florida.
What do Et slicks normally weigh for say 30" x 12-14"?
I was looking at tires for next year, Toyo Proxes 275/65/16 weighed something like 45lbs a piece, alot better than my 285 nittos at 65 a piece.
nwpadmax 08-17-2005, 12:48 AM How about ....
aluminum front drive shaft
remove front sway bar (don't swerve to miss any critters)
titanium torsion bars
titanium leaf springs
titanium exhaust (straight piped & shortened)
You'll only need a few dollars to do all that.... ):h
What the heck are they lowering the weights for, anyway?
