Hey, I have a 82 Jimmy with 97 6.5 in it. I kept the mechanical ip and it's been running good for 100k miles. About 50k ago ( miles not dollars) I added a Banks turbo and that was like nite and day, Jimmy ran good.
Problem.. the truck sat for about 2 months and I went to drive it, it started ok but I noticed power was way down. Then it died, started it back up and it died again and then it would just crank and crank. I pulled the filter and there was about 2 tablespoons of water in it, so I tossed it and then installed a new filter. Got it started and noticed alot of white smoke and the engine seemed to miss. I figured it was cold and let it come up to temp but it still smoked ... alot. Pulled the injectors and 5 of the 8 was dribbling at low pressure, but a nice mist at high pressure. I replaced all of the injectors. Not much of a change.. So I replaced the pump. Now the engine will not run below 2500 rpm without loading up, smoking and dying. It seems to run fine 2500 and up (hard to put it in gear at this speed) but will not idle and wont run below 2200 rpm.
I like the truck and would appreciate any help at all. Tomorrow I plan to run fuel from a fresh can just in case that is the problem.
Open to any suggestions...oh I would rather push this truck than drive a ford.

Did you drain the old fuel from the tank? I think I would remove the old diesel, clean out the fuel lines and see what happens. It sound to me like bad fuel water/algae and the lines have air in them. Just a thought.

You will get better answers in the 6.5 forum. I will move this there.

What kind of injection pump do you have? 4911 from a 6.5 or are you running a 6.2 pump? First order of business would be to call whoever rebuilt your pump and ask what's up. I have had numerous problems in the past with rebuilt pumps, so I never assume that just because a pump has just been rebuilt, that it is right.

It had a 4126 and I replaced that with a 4267. I bought the pump at auction "as is".

Let me get this straight. You have a '97 6.5 turbo engine, with a Banks turbo kit on it and your running a 4126/4267 pump? Did you just crank the leaf spring down in them? both of those are for REALLY OLD 6.2 N/A engines. You don't get good used injection pumps at auctions, just cores.

4911 or 4970 mechanical pump for 6.5 turbo would be best, 5088 or 5436 for 6.5 N/A would be second, you'd just have to turn up the fuel some for the turbo.

Just out of curiosity, what did you pay for the 4267 pump?

My suggestion, short of buying a 6.5 turbo pump, is send both of them to a fuel shop and tell them to use whatever parts they can out of both and update, rebuild, recalibrate one to as close to 4911 specs as they can. Might save you some $$$ on the price of rebuilding, might not, depends on the shape your cores are in.

The 4126 was on my old 6.2 and was rebuilt 20k prior to me putting the 6.5 in. I just cranked the fuel up thru the top cover till I got black smoke wot on a hard pull. Never did get dark smoke. I kept my egt under 1100 per Banks suggestion. There's 120k on that 4126. The 4267 cost me $200 and was suppose to be rebuilt. I didn't know they made mechanical pumps for the 6.5, I thought they all were the electronic one's so I didn't pursue it. Everone around here will only sell me a pump for $350~$400. So far nobody has suggested rebuilding the old one. Do you know of a place that would?

There's a LOT of differences between a 4126 and a 4911, or even a 4267 for that matter. Rebuilding it will still run you $300-400 and it won't be a 4911 when its done unless you put a new head and rotor in it, which would double the price. In that case you'd be better off finding a good 6.5 core to start with....like this one...
