Bought another diesel today. A 1995 MB E300 Diesel. 6cyl non- turbo . Never smoked in, never wrecked. All maintaince records, 212,000 mi. Paid $1,800. Neighbor around the corner had it, It wasn't being used, when I asked about it she said I'll sell it for 1,800. I said I'll take it.
Best part is 35mpg.

Nice! I'm looking for a diesel that gets 30 plus miles to the gallon as well...I didn't even think to look at the MB lines. I thought about the VW and Jeep...i'd really just like to get a dodge cummins, 2 wheel drive with a manual trans and see what I can get since most of it will be highway miles.

The older MB's and VW's I have had the best luck with.

If you can stand driving a car get the VW. Picked up my 02 jetta TDi in July and have 20k more now. Summer time I see up to 60mpg and winter with snow tires between 45-48mpg

Buddy of mine has one he calls Uncle Jed.
If you're under 6' and/or under 250 lbs, then you're probably OK. Above that, it's just a small car. But those things can get 50 mpg without even thinking...

maintenance on the VW's are a PITA. A friend of mine is a mechanic at a your a pee'n automotive center. He claims his shop charges 2 hours of labor to change out a headlight bulb.

I just did a complete maintaince. Changed all fluids & filters. (except for tranny). I did treat the fuel tank wit a biocide as car sat for 4 years, luckily it only had a 1/4 tank.
I did find a leaky tranny line. Replaced wipers, and trunK weather stripping.
Here's a good link for MB parts for anyone who is interested.

I am in the same boat. Im looking to get another diesel and originally wanted a 2wd dodge manual p-pumped cummins to see what i could get with it. I was thinking maybe around 26? Anyone have experience with these? I am also looking into jettas... i just hate to go foreign though. Also looking at the MB's cause theyre pretty cheap but ive also heard they are unbearably slow
