Moved a few weeks ago into another house. Had everything my wife wanted but I got the shaft as the garage was a plain ol' garage with no cabinets and an aged, stained floor. I told her we would buy it "if" I got to do the garage "my" way :) Any who ...within 2 weeks I had new cabinets put in and did the racedeck.com tile garage floor system. Turned out pretty nice ...still planning some other goodies later on.

Looks sweet. I've contemplated doing this. How does it hold up to a floor jack rolling around, or anything heavy like that?

Also, how does it clean up? Do you just hose it down?

Thanks.!

Sure looks pretty. Was it DIY? Cost?
More importantly, share with us the negotiating skills you used to get the little lady to sign off on such a cool garage. She must have wanted the house BAD.

Racedeck.com is considered the "cadillac" of the tile floor systems. I did a lot of research before deciding on the Racedeck brand. Costco carries the Motofloor brand on their web site at a decent price but I learned all the various brands are all made by the same company (SnapLock Industries in Utah) and it's just that they all vary by quality. From talking to others the non-Racedeck brands do not have a 15 yr warranty and the seems between tiles aren't near as tight. Retail for Racedeck is around $3.75/sqft. however in negotiating with the rep for my area I managed to get it for $2.99 sq/ft which wasn't bad considering I would have paid that much for the Motofloor via Costco which isn't as good as the Racedeck.

It's not cheap ...my garage is actually a 4-car garage however the previous owner partitioned off the last single stall and made a separate room out of it ...the wall is where you see the big cabinets mounted on the wall and door up by my tool box. It was already carpeted so I did do the racedeck on it ...however the 3-car area that I did do was approx. 750 sq/ft.

Durability? Not sure as I haven't had it long enough to abuse. There are companies out there that drive fork lifts on it and it's used in other high-traffic industrial applications. The tile is guaranteed for 15 years as well. I have a bunch of left over scrap pieces from doing the edges and will use under jack stands, etc. where I think I could damage the floor. I wouldn't hesitate at all using a floor jack, etc. ...just nothing will real sharp edges under extreme weight ...although I think it could take it with ease ...the tiles are rated for 13,000 lbs per square foot ...and the material is tough as nails.

Time will tell ... Cost? Not cheap! ...but I told my wife I was going to do it "right" this time. In our last house that had a 3-car garage I did the epoxy floor myself and wasn't impressed with it...and I had a bunch of mix-matched cabinets that looked like chit. All in all I spent right at $2K on the racedeck flooring ... cabinets were $3500! ...so I have about $5500 in everything and it looks really nice IMO.

Yes, you can just hose off the racedeck if that's what you want to do ...most people mop it and apply some type of spray-on protectant that makes it shine like a baby's arse.

How did I get the wife to go for it? :) Well it was the house or garage ...she knew I was upset in knowing I'd have to do the garage in the new house all over again after I had just spent a bunch of time doing the previous garage. We also pocketed some change the the house swap that made spending the money easier :)

Beer fridge? Right on ... I'm ordering a fridge kit that makes your fridge look just like a craftsman toolbox ...comes with these stick-on panels that go on the front/sides, etc.

DIY? I had the cabinets professionally installed. They are built right into the walls and do not touch floor at all. I ordered the racedeck and it was delivered on a big pallet to my front door. It goes together easily ...the tiles snap/lock to each other and all you need for installation is a rubber mallet...and a skill or jig saw to cut the ones around the edges. I completed the entire floor in about 4 hours.

Tophog,

Does it give, crack or pop when you walk/drive on it? They have a super website. Thanks for posting this as I just moved and was gonna do the epoxy thing. Nice thing about this is you can take it with you when you leave!

No, there is no give or anything when you walk on it. The stuff is hard ...not the soft plyable type of foam pads you see sometimes in autoparts store.

The only anonomoly I would say the tile flooring has is it has a "hollow" sound when you walk on it. If you call racedeck I think they will send you a sample so you can get an idea of what the stuff is made out of, how it feels, put it thru some abuse, etc.

Yes, taking it with you when you leave is an option ...but also a catch 22 as the garage in my last house is what sold the house :) and taking something as noticable as the floor with you probably wouldn't go off to well. :)

Thanks, Tophog. Nice looking job. I'm going to look at it and see what I can do.

Tophog very nice!! Very clean and professional.:thumb: I am sure you will enjoy it for many years.
After months of research I was very close to going the Racedeck route as they are the best. But in the end ,for cost reasons, I installed VCT and have no regrets.

So tell me about the fridge kit....where can I see and buy?

There are lots of fridge/toolbox kits ... here are a few I've found:

Here's how to do it yourself :)

Very nice floor, .....Quick Question, how thick is the material, and how did you finish the area in front of the garage door.....16' threshold? Is there a base cove at the edges? I really like it, Thanks,
Sir-col

I'm guessing it's about 7/16" thick or so. You can get the border trim which tapers down to the ground providing a smooth transition/rolling edge from ground to tile. You can read more about it at http://www.racedeck.com/residential.html

Thanks, I looked the website over, but did not see any dimensions or edge finish etc.... I'm going to call them and see if I can obtain a sample or two, nice job....Thanks

TopHog, If you think that your cement floor that you show is dirty and stained, then YES this flooring system is definately for you!

Mine is cracked, unlevel, and must have been trowled with an old 2x4!

I guess it's all what your used to.

Personally I'd prefer glass smooth mag finished concrete floor with a waxed finish over the rough diamond plate finish of the Racedeck.
