: Auto meter gauges
wjjeeper 08-12-2005, 04:06 PM okay I'm looking at putting some Z Series gauges into my truck.
So what is the better boost gauge to install? The 0-35 PSIor the 0-60 PSI.
I don't see why I'd want to monitor vac, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I also plan on getting the 0-1600 pyro. This should be sufficient yes?
GMC2500HD 08-12-2005, 04:08 PM I would say just install the 0-35 for boost. I however have the 0-60 just in case I decide to up the turbo. No need to monitor vac unless you just want to.. As for the pyro, yes that is fine..
wjjeeper 08-12-2005, 04:17 PM Thanks for the short direct confirmation.
Although the 0-60 would be nice for the future, the 0-35 will give a more exact figure of boost levels.
Anyone know what kind of MAX boost I should be looking at with my Hypertech on stage 3?
wjjeeper 08-12-2005, 04:20 PM Oh one more thing..... anyone have pics of a two or three A-pillar mount in dark charcoal with a set of black faced, and black ringed gauges (like the Z-series)
Mark Craig 08-15-2005, 10:36 AM wjjeeper,
0-35 PSI will be fine with the Hypertech as will the 0-1600 degree pyro. We don't have a pic of the a pillar you asked about with the gauges and painted to match etc, but we do have the Auto Meters, the paint, and the pillars at guaranteed prices, check our site, and call us if you have any questions etc.

i think for boost levels you will see from 22-27 lbs. thats what I see but ive got predator not hypertech. sured like to see a bit more, cmon
wjjeeper 08-15-2005, 10:50 AM Hey Mark I've already got the painted A-pillar. Could you quote me a price for the gauges shipped to my postal code T6R 2P4.
SaguaroKid 08-15-2005, 03:41 PM I think they match the stock gages pretty well?
wjjeeper 08-15-2005, 03:49 PM I think they match the stock gages pretty well?
Yup that confirms it.... I'm buying the Z-series......
They blend in with the stock gauges, and thats what I was looking for.
Mark Craig 08-16-2005, 01:51 PM wjjeeper,
Mail has been delivered, couldn't get an exact Canada UPS quote with just the Zip code but it'll be close.

Diesel Dragon 08-16-2005, 10:37 PM Good Luck with that monitoring vacum thing :duh: :whip: :shootself :laugh_exp :bounce:
dieselpusher 08-19-2005, 11:47 PM Today I installed the Z-series gauges in our truck. (first mod...) 0-35 boost, and 1600 pyro. Took two hours to install both. Got a slick mount, by AutoMeter. It mounts above the rear view mirror, and below the console. Looks like it came from the factory... Part number was 18022 (Auto Meter). I don't like the aftermarket look of the pillar mounts, and didn't like the overhead console "attitude" style mount, too far back and out of line-of-sight. This mount looks great, works great, easy to install.

Buckshotmckee 08-20-2005, 12:39 AM Here are my Z-series. Sorry there in a real Diesel, but you can imagine. I got the 0-60 because its always better to have a little more then not enough. I can hit 45psi of boost. ;)

Here's the Auto Meter 18022 mount in a brand "F" truck. Comes in a three or four pack also. Sure looks better than pillar mounts...
dieseldan723 08-21-2005, 06:21 PM Dieselpusher,
I do kinda like that. At first I thought you were putting it in the opening in the console. How much was your total cost?
dieselpusher 08-21-2005, 06:35 PM Let's see...
Pyrometer $150. Auto Meter 2654
Boost $57. Auto Meter 2614
Mount $50 Auto Meter 18022
12' tubing for boost gauge $13 Auto Meter 3226
Total: $270 plus tax
Jegs online has all the parts a little cheaper. I bought mine at a local speed shop.
Interesting, I haven't seen the mount on any of our online vendors websites. Surprising because it's a very nice integrated look.

dieselpusher 08-22-2005, 12:22 AM Mr. Buckshot, any good dirt bike riding up there these days? Not Pismo, but the Huasna road area up to Pozo, that sort of thing. Used to 4wheel it years ago when we lived on Deer Trail, and Vista Grande Lane. Like to bring my kids up with the bikes if it's still a good ride.

Good morning! A lot of the roads have been closed by the ranchers in the Huasna area. Unless you know someone. There's still stoney creek but the gates locked all of the time. Pozo is still open. Lots of good open trails still. Do you know were turkey flats are? There is a lot of good trails out there, camping spots. Another spot is out off of 166 towards Cuyama. There is Rockfront ranch and across the road (166) is Miranda Pines, both national forest. I hope this helps. Tye
dieselpusher 08-22-2005, 12:46 PM Thanks Tye.
We'll give it a shot.

Mark Craig 08-23-2005, 01:41 PM dieselpusher,
We have all those mounts here at DPPI, we have a little better price on the gauges too. We have to have the best price as we have a pricing policy that GUARANTEES it to any customer so we research it and post them expecpt for the MAP protected items that the manufactuers won't let us list the prices of. Then you just call us and we take care of you on the phone!
Mark @ DPPI
wjjeeper 08-23-2005, 05:50 PM Has anyone found that the 8' lead that comes with the Autometer pyro is too short for an A-pillar install?
I just read one post that has me second guessing if its enough length
SaguaroKid 08-23-2005, 06:36 PM My was long enough.
Buckshotmckee 08-23-2005, 07:05 PM Mine was long enough. The only thing that was too short was the vacuum tube for the boost gauge.

I missed them, yes your prices look very good. I recommend anyone interested in mounting gauges look at this option.

wjjeeper 08-25-2005, 12:17 AM Well I installed the pyro and boost gauge today. All went well including the tap for the pyro. To be honest the trickiest thing was trying to keep the boost nylon tube from crimping when laying it out.
I wired my lights and pyro power wires into the back of the lightswitch... one for power with the key on, and one for the lights on......just for info.

Does this allow for control with the dimmer switch then?
wjjeeper 08-25-2005, 09:56 AM Does this allow for control with the dimmer switch then?
You know what.... I haven't even checked yet. I wasn't too concerned with them dimming with the dash lights, so if it does added bonus.
I'll check tonight and post back.
Max Power 08-25-2005, 10:09 AM If you wire it to the brown white behind the light switch it will dim.
wjjeeper 08-25-2005, 10:20 AM If you wire it to the brown white behind the light switch it will dim.
Ok.. well that's the one I wired it to.
For the 12V keyed power I wired it to the purple white behind the light switch... :cool2: I'm kinda happy that they will dim.
I'm so happy with the way these gauges turned out. Everything under the hood looks stock as I used split loom on all the wiring and nylon tubing. (side note - I hate putting wires into that stuff, what a pain)

Is there a "how to" posted about where to wire these? I am a novice at electrical. Brown/White Purple/White, how do you know? I am wiring both a Pyro and Boost gauge. :help2:
Thanks.
wjjeeper 08-25-2005, 11:12 AM If you pull the switch out, look on the plug. On the very top pass. side you'll see a brown wire with white stripe.... a few wires down from that you'll see a purple wire with a white stripe.
Just have a test light handy and you'll see the purple is keyed power and the brown is powered when the lights are on. Just tie into those two wires.
wjjeeper 08-26-2005, 09:32 AM I just wanted to report back that with the way I wired things up the gauges do indeed dim with the dimmer switch. :ro)

Do they dim proportionately with the dash lights? Some have said they dim at a different rate, how could that happen?

Mine seem to dim proportionally.
dieseldan723 09-02-2005, 01:02 AM Thanks for all your help! One more question, do you disconnect the battery before wiring the gauges? I would think so but wanted to ask.
maxno2 09-02-2005, 09:34 AM wjjeeper:
Did your boost gauge come with compression fittings for both ends of the tubing?
Mine only came with the female fitting for the gauge end, no fitting was provided for the intake side. I think I can pick one up locally as I'm hoping to do the install this weekend, but I'm going to call Autometer anyway.

Wjjeeper,
I did exactly what you said above, however BOTH wire taps dimmed (brown/white and purple/white). I wonder if you dimmed your lights if your pyro would stop working?
mountainstoner 10-03-2005, 07:51 PM What color is the backlight on the Z-series? Same as the dash?
Thanx!
msully 10-09-2005, 01:27 AM If you wire it to the brown white behind the light switch it will dim.
How do you get to the wires behinf the light switch? It's pretty tight back there.
Black Max 10-09-2005, 09:43 AM If you have removed the plastic dash, then the light switch can be removed and pulled out. It's held in place by some plastic tabs. Much easier to access the wiring that way.
TheBac 10-09-2005, 04:58 PM Dang..those Autometers are the same as the pair I have sitting gathering dust in the garage from my Olds days.

Yes if I dim my instr. lights right down the pyro shuts off....not a big deal if you ask me.
wjjeeper 10-09-2005, 05:47 PM Thanks for all your help! One more question, do you disconnect the battery before wiring the gauges? I would think so but wanted to ask.
I never bothered to disconnect batteries....

No I had to go to a local place to pick up a barbed tee and a couple compression fittings for the intake side.
wjjeeper 10-09-2005, 05:53 PM Here's a picture of my install. Used the Z series Autometers.
Hamops 10-09-2005, 11:24 PM I think they match the stock gages pretty well?
Is that A-pillar mount just a cover or does it replace the existing A-pillar cover? The reason I'm asking, is that, in the picture, I noticed some screws in the A-pillar that aren't normally there.

Hey Wjjeeper, does you pillar mount replace the original A-pillar cover? I noticed that yours doesn't appear to have screws on it like the mount in the SaguaroKid's picture.

Yes mine is a cover that goes ontop of the a-pillar. To didn't like the idea of puting screws or drilling holes into my factory a-pillar for the xmas trees, so I used velcro to hold it on. Works slick!!
C.A.P 10-10-2005, 05:22 PM I recognize that pillar from somewhere  !!!!!!!!!!!!!! kind of gives ya a warm feeling seing something you owned working in someone elses truck...nice hook up :ro) :
RichLockyer 10-10-2005, 11:57 PM I mounted mine with 3m double-sided tape. It was designed to mount body moulding and works like a champ. Comes off of the roll with red plastic on one side. Stuck it to the pillar cover, stuck the cover to the original pillar, then gradually pull the plastic strip out while pressing it into place.
Totally clean, just like Jeeper's, but not removeable without replacing the tape.

Thanks for the props and the deal CAP. :ro)
