I get about what your getting. I drove it to Canada once from Florida, Empty, at 75MPH most of the way I got around 23. Usually around town I get 18-20. If I hook any kind of trailer behind it I get 10. This is any trailer from 3500 pound car hauler to 16,000 pound boat. I have a 5th wheel around 10K it also gives me 10 MPG. I have just recently started modding my truck so these numbers are all bone stock.

Yep,
2001 owner here.
15.9-16.2 City/Daily. Edge set at 3

12-12.5 towing. Edge off for towing.

This has been what I have gotten since 10K miles. Very consistent. Obviously it appears that the LB7 and LLY motor combo's are about the same. That is good since the LLY has more standard power than the LB7. Still not selling mine though...

Interestingly - 19.5 the second tank after the injectors were changed, must have been a fluke, or my math

I just rolled over 30,000 miles with about 7,000 of those towing our 11k 5th wheel. DIC says overall MPG since new is 12.6. I've made several spot checks of DIC accuracy and find it to be very close. Truck is bone stock. Towing, I get between 11 and 13. Around town, I get between 12.5 and 13.5. Haven't done any highway runs without the trailer. Sure will be glad when I get it broken in and see the sudden jump in MPG I'v heard about!

I've only checked a couple of tanks. One was 21.8mpg on a strech of Fwy in TX and AZ. The other one was 20.8 from Salt Lake to the Dalles , OR, 626 miles on 30.1 Gal. I drive it around town here, I know it doesn't do well doing that. Fun to drive a big ol truck like that though that will go like a raped ape :)

Around town - shouldn't count cauz of a NEED FOR SPEED - 12.5 Edge on 4
Highway - MT and around 70-75 16.5
Part of a trip from Den to PHX outside tires off 18.5 amount of rubber on the road does make a difference.:)

I have 2500 miles on my big butted dually. Driving to and from work I get approx. 15-15.6 mpg...towing sig. 5er, loaded (12,750), get just a "hair" over 12mpg when towing "mostly down hill", when towing "mostly up hill", been as low as 9-10mpg...no mods, driving 55-60..thinking about putting a cat back MBRP exhuast sys. on..
I check every tank, like to compare what I actually put in and used compared to what the DIC say's I used...actually the DIC is fairly accurate, but always a bit on the optimistic side.

Sure is not my findings. My 01 LB7 got 17~18 mpg on the interstate empty and 12 mpg pulling 12500 pound RV at 70 mph. My 05 LLY gets 14~14.5 mpg on the interstate and 9.6 pulling a measly 4000 pound wedge motorcycle trailer. I'm scared to pull the RV with the 05.

empty:
1. city/country driving to work 15-17 mpg
2. interstate @ 65 mph ... 17-19 mpg///@ 70 mph ... 15 mpg/// ^ 70 mph ... mileage drops like a rock

towing: heavy 33' travel trailer with cruise set @ 65 mph ... 10-11 mpg

currently just over 100,000 miles and above mileage has been pretty consistent

I sure hope you have better luck than I do with the Dealer. I was told 13 empty was good mpg by my dealer and by GMC Customer Assistance Center. I was also told by GMC Customer assistance center that they do not and will not ever investigate mpg problems with 2500 or 3500 trucks.

My 01 on got 1 mpg less pulling 12000 pounds than the 05 gets empty.-:t

My discust with my 05 on terms of mpg, Hot running temp, cooling fan always running, not able to hold fifth gear pulling 4000 pounds, struggleing to 7000 pounds with coolant temps of 230 has about convinced me to buy anything But GM. This is my 4th GM 1 ton crew cab dually and my 9th GM truck, mostlikey my last unless they buy the POS back or fix it.

I get 14.5 to 15 commuting which is mostly stop and go driving.
Towing with a GVW of 23,500lbs over labor day I got a high of 9mpg and a low of 6mpg. Had more to do with wind than anything. Large 48' toy box. All interstate at around 70mph.
Towing and running empty mixed tanks at around 60 mph I got 12 mpg.
Best tank was a all highway at 60mph I recorded 18.3

All hand verified at fill up.

I do have a Edge Juice mostly set at 1 or stock when towing. 2 or 3 around town when empty.

Ican't figure how some of you are getting the mileage your getting. My truck is bone stock, 20,000 miles, 2 wheel drive and a bed cover. On the highways here in Florida, almost flat roads, cruise set at 65-68 when I figure by hand, I'm getting 11mpg not towing. Instent milage shows 17-19, but hand calculations are lower. When I tow my 5vr toyhauler with my Ultra in the back I get 8.5-9. Never added any type of additive. Is there a need to add an injector cleaner? Do they make it for the diesel and what kind if any should I use?

Does the Edge void the warrenty? I was joking with the dealer saying I'm going to buy an Edge and see if it would fix my crappy fuel milage. He stated it would void my drivetrain warrenty and would leave a code in the computer??????? I get 15-16 Daily to and from work 64 mph most of the way, about 20miles each way with 15min. of city driving each way.
Running empty on long highway runs about 150 miles and up I get 18-19.1 running about 70 mph.
4,000-12,000lb trailers 10-12
After owning a 6.5 that would not get out of it's own way (No Power!) and then many 7.4 gas jobs at 10 mpg empty, I am happy with my milage.

I've got around 94000 on a 03 3500 and just got 19mpg on the freeway unloaded. Going a little over 70mph most of the time. It was fairly cold which seemed to decrease the mileage from summer temps. I did start using Power Service supplement when it started to get colder. It sure beats my old 350 gas half ton.

I haven't had it very long but in the few months I have had my 2005 Chevy 3500 Dually Crew Cab 8' bed 4X4 with of course the Duramax and the allison and the 3:73 gears I have gotten 19.4 to the gallon empty and pulling my 9200# TT I got 12.6 and this is of course keeping the speedo between 60-65. I bet if I was to drop it back to 55-60 the mileage would go up.

Stop and go freeway 15 mpg

Highway steady speeds *
60 mph 17 mpg light load
70 mph 15 mpg

90 mph 13 mpg w/cap, 1500 pounds,+ up to 50 gal fuel

I had the dealer up date the tram. last week had one for shift and one for the fuel. Can't tell it help much. I had a 2002 3/4 HD Al/DM I was getting 18/19 on interstate empty. I hear all the story's of 18 plus on the duallys.Got a guy I work with has a New Ford and sure gives me a hard time he claims he is getting 20 mpg. I do have the bad habit of keeping my foot in it but if you run I-10 you get run over if you don't . If any body knows any trick other than slowing down to 60 please let me know. Wow! I read about 4 pages of posts and was suprised at the differences.
I have 30,000 miles on mine and I get 16.5 empty driving 70 miles a day to work. Half of that is at 70mph the other half stop and go freeway driving.
With the Lance on at around 4000 lbs I get 12.5. With the Lance and towing the 4500 lb boat and trailer I get 9.5 to 10 at 70 mph. I have the Edge J/A now and run level 2 with no change in milage loaded. Level 3 empty with no change since there are so many cops where I live it's impossible to race around without major tickets........I hand calculate and since adding the Edge the DIC readings are off by about 2mpg. It's a far cry from the 2 other duallys I have owned with 454's and 4:56 gears.

Very consistent 16.7 at 70 MPH. Mid to upper 17's at 2000 RPM. 9 to 10 pulling the 37' 5er. 14's pulling a 21' bass boat. The key to the best mileage? 2K on the tach and that's hard to do when empty.

We've had "The Silver Fox" just over a month now and 1200 city miles. DIC say's 15.5 around town. We haven't towed or driven any highway miles yet:cool: . I'm satisfied. Heading for Bristol March 21st. I'll post a detailed tow report when we get back. "Bristol: Racing The Way It Outta Be"!!!

I found a new trick,I put the hamsters IN the tires.(2 per tire,8 total) And threw the whore to the coyotes and I am now getting 86 mpg.(doing 112mph too)The hard part is getting rid of the whore and not pi$$ing off the hamsters at the same time!:help:

03-05-2006, 08:20 AM
well 66flh I think you should add 2 more wheels with tires and get 12 hamsters in there and I bet your mileage would double while still doing 112mph, but throwing the whore to the coyotes what did the coyotes ever do to you to be treated so badly and also throwing away all your fun time. remember safety first!

Hey..Let me get the thread back on track. I towed a small utility trailer(empty) back home to gather up more firewood. I did the unthinkable this weekend and actually stayed around 55-65mph.....I Know I know...I always go 75+. Anyway, I filled up when I got back just to check, A staggering 17.6 mpg in CC LB K3500 Dually in reasonable headwinds and heavy rain. It goes to show how you can get great mileage keeping that thing at 1700-1800 rpm.

Another on topic report. Just completed the first tank of fuel. 485 miles on 29.472 gallons or 16.46 MPG driving around in small city and some highway. Average trip length between starts about 15 miles. Chevron fuel and Power Service Diesel Kleen additive. Mostly average driving with a hard start every now and then. Very Satisfied with the results.

Hey Duramax Dually maybe if you had Hamsters like 66flh you could also get in the 80's for fuel mileage.
66flh any time it doesn't snow is okay for me as I live in NH and this year has been super for no snow and very little 0 degree days also still riding my Harley to work. If it weren't for a grandson I would be down there with you but in a lower elevation so I wouldn't get any snow, can you tell I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

man, some of you guys are getting some good milage. when i first got my truck i would get around 17-18 mpg on the hwy now after 10,000 miles i get 14mpg empty w/ the edge ez on level 2, 11mpg when towing a 7,000lb trailer on level 2........on my edge ez it seems i get better milage on level 2 weather i'm towing or not.........level 1 = 11mpg empty, level 2 =14mpg empty, level 3 = 9mpg empty, i think my mileafe sucks but its still better than the '05 6.0 powerstroke i had and much better than the '01 7.3 powerstroke i had............. sorry guys i just noticed i posted in the 3500 section and i have a 2500 single rearwheel

66flh, it will be a while before I make it down there as my wife doesn't want to leave her family and I myself don't want to leave my Grandson until he gets growed up a whole bunch more. Who was the guy you bought your shovel from here in NH and where was he located, I know quite a few riders but not all as of yet but I keep working on it.

700r guess you can see what both groups get for mileage, I would think you should be getting better then that, I checked mine today and running just around town and letting the engine warm up a bit before I head off for local junts of about 3-4 miles tops I am getting 17.2. I have heard that some computers in these truck aren't correct in the mileage and theamounts of fuel used and I have been checking mine and I haven't had over 1/10 of a gallon difference in fuel used and that could also be from the way I fuel up, have to be constant and don't let it foam over.

Believe it or not, some of our higher mtns.(13,000 ft.+)keep snow from one year to the next and average over 360 in. a year. The guy I bought my 66 shovel from was named Chris V by the way.He died of stomach cancer about 4 yr.s ago.Cool dude, learned alot from him.Gonna go take the hamsters out for a putt now.

well I guess them there mountains would be a spot I would stay away from but maybe look at thru some real strong glasses that are disposable so I would have to look again. Going to hit the upper 50's today and for the next couple so they say on the bube tube, have to put the dually away and get the bike out.

I just made a round trip from Ten Mile TN to Moncks Corner SC. 880 miles round trip. Truck was only load with me, wife and dog and a cooler. I drove the posted interste speeds of 65 and 70 mph. Hand calculated I got a wopping 13.6 mpg by the dic I got 13.8. To say that is sad and sucks is an understatement. Truck is a 05 4x4 crew cab dooley with 20,000 miles on it. My 01 crew cab dooley would get 18 mpg empty and 11.7 pulling a 12,000 pound RV on the same exact trip.

What was shocking was trans temp stayed at 200. Outside temp was 81 degrees.

Sure hope the 06 LBZ 4x4 crew cab dooley is a better truck.

How accurate is the DIC? Trip Cincinnati to Cleveland 20.1,return trip 20.2
68 MPH 2000 RPM'S 1400 miles on the truck.

My DIC is right on the money, when I refuel it is only off by 1/10 of a gallon and that could be the way I am refueling and /or any slope in the refueling pad.

You guys are making me feel proud of mine. Other than aerodynamics from the Western Hauler Body, mine is stock and sporting 19 empty and so far no less than 16 pulling 15k tractor and equipment.
The interesting thing with mine is before I replaced injectors, (4 failed, but replaced all 8), I was knocking down 24.7

My DIC is right on the money, when I refuel it is only off by 1/10 of a gallon and that could be the way I am refueling and /or any slope in the refueling pad.My DIC is usually pretty close as far as gallons used and mileage. Why is it that everyone claims that they are off so bad?I guess I got a good DIC and a bad fuel gauge.

03-15-2006, 02:16 PM
66flh, the reason you have a bad fuel gauge is you keep putting those used hamsters in there!
