: Dual Stacks No Muffler?
NM03LB7 08-11-2005, 11:13 PM I just purchased a dual stack for my 03 duramax :ro) but I haven't recieved it yet. Has anybody tried this out? What does it sound like? Is there a heat issue in the bed or with the rear window? How about EGT without muffler? I guess I shoulda been asking these things before I spent $375...
noreaster 08-11-2005, 11:15 PM What size are the stacks?
NM03LB7 08-11-2005, 11:16 PM 4 in. from the exhaust and 5 in. stacks..I pulled the muffler off after the exhaust brake the other night and it was loud but the brake sounded good...
duramaxdiesel 08-12-2005, 07:05 PM Cool. Where did you purchase the stacks from?
NM03LB7 08-14-2005, 08:58 PM I got them on ebay for $375, shipping included. Still haven't got them yet. Can't wait to hear them.
Zorganov 08-14-2005, 09:25 PM I did that same setup. So far no heat issues in box or rear window. As for EGT's I can't comment, I did the mod before gauges. Sound without muffler is really nice, however it gets annoying after a while on the highway. I've recently installed an MBRP muffler into my system, and I really like that sound. It still keeps the low rumble of the straight pipe at low end, but instead of it barking after 2500rpm, it just keeps growling. Pics are available if you want!

Zorganov 08-15-2005, 02:05 AM Alright, alright, here goes!!! You can click on the thumbnails to get bigger pic.
Here's the old exhaust out except for the downpipe. I have a 3.5"-> 4" adapter that went on here.

Here's a pic of the splitter I used in the bed of the truck. The 90* elbow faces forward if you hadn't gathered that yet. At this point it's all 4" still

This is the hole we had to cut on the bed of the truck. I wasn't too impressed with this guy's methods, but to some it might be good enough. I had to stay back from the cross member of the box too.

You can see the reducing coupler here welded to a straight section of 4" pipe that goes straight back to the 90*

Same section of 4" pipe going to the 90* up into the bed

View from in the box, used short radius 90* in the corners and then welded 4" -> 5" reducers on top of the 90* to accomodate the 5" stacks.

Any questions, I'd be happ to answer!!:ro)
NM03LB7 08-15-2005, 11:03 PM They look great...What did you use to cut the unsightly hole in the bed? I thought about using a hole saw!?!? I sure do appreciate the pics. They help out in many ways. New to this sight and hope more people are as helpful as you. Thanks Boss...
Zorganov 08-24-2005, 12:48 AM The unsightly hole was cut by a "sawz-all" that the muffler guy had handy. I went to buy a 6" hole saw to do it properly, but that was supposed to cost me nearly $75 CDN just for the holesaw so I said no thanks. I'll be fixing it up soon I hope.

I intend to use a blow torch, but I will place wet cloths on the frame and stuff underneath. Small cutting tip with just enough flame to make the hole.
NM03LB7 09-04-2005, 11:43 PM I finally put the kit in last week. I won't even get into how I cut the hole. All I can say is why didn't anyone tell me there was a bed rail where I cut the hole. The rail added quite a while to the job.
I love the sound until I floor it. It gets awfully loud. I was looking for loud but it is a little much. I'm either gonna put the old 4" muffler on after the Banks brake or buy another muffler. Thought about going with 5" from the brake to 5" muffler and then out. I love the look though and so does most people as I'm driving down the road.:ro) I'm trying to figure out a way to easily convert back and forth from stacks to no stacks because they take up alot of room in the bed if I need to haul something. I'll probably go with a turn out from the muffler.
Thanks for the input folks. As soon as I figure out how to attach pic's I'll do just that.
_nar_ 09-05-2005, 12:32 AM Zorganov-Nice pics of how it went on. I always use your truck as an example of sweet stacks when people ask me about them on a duramax.
plowking 09-05-2005, 01:48 AM They make a insert that can go into stacks to quiet them down. There is a big rig accessories store near me called Berubes truck accessories. They have an online catalogue, but I suppose any big rig store might have them. They look similiar to a baffle or honeycom. My daughter drives a work truck with dual exhaust. That exhaust is a square tubular box with hole on each end on top with flange for stacks and one hole in bottom for pipe from engine, the box acts as muffler but is loud.
Zorganov 09-26-2005, 10:58 PM Hey thanks _nar_!! I do like them too, they just get a little in the way some times for box room.... buy I guess the toolbox and tank I've got back there don't help either...:ro)
