If the pump has never been rebuilt, a new pump will help it more than anything.

You can advance the timing, but you probably won't notice any difference.

There are three mounting bolts that hold the pump on the truck. loosen those three, 15 MM wrench, and turn the top of the pump towards the driver's side. Little move makes a big change.

If you look on the mounting flange, at the top there is a line stamped into it. That is a reference point as to how far you moved it. It should be aligned perfectly, or advance by the width of the line. If it is any farther than that, then someone has already advanced it, and you should plan on getting a pump.

You can turn the pump up to feed it more fuel. It will make a difference. Take the top three screws off the pump to get the cover off. Use a turkey baster or something to pull the fuel out. Inside you will see the governor spring the runs parallel to the engine. There is an allen head bolt in back of the pump that hold this assembly in. You will have to take that bolt out. I then moved the governor assembly to the drivers side and you will see a rotating plate underneath. Turn the engine manually and watch for the allen headed screw to be visible. It is a 5/32''. Turn this screw clockwise to turn the pump up. Some say 1/8 of a turn is enough. We turned my buddies closer to a 1/4 turn. Made some difference. It will turn a little hard. Put fuel back in, or you will have air pockets that will work out over a day or two.

An 82 w/78k miles either needs a pump or is going to real soon.
