It was designed by GM and Isuzu, but GM owns Dmax limited, so it is not built by Isuzu, it is built by GM. At least that is the way I understand it all.

Parts come from many countries.
Lot's of machining is done in Moraine, Ohio and test run is done there.

It was entirely an Isuzu design with parameters specified by GM.

Pop your hood, look on the passenger side near the air cleaner. IF yours is like mine the engine label says "Izuzi Motors Inc." and all the emissions stuff etc reference an Izuzu.
Agreed, it is built in Ohio, joint effort with Izuzu and GM, and GM is a minority shareholder in Izusu

This I know for sure gentlemen......... all of the farmers in my area use Izusu engines on their irrigation pumps and wouldn't have anything else. That's Izusu not Cummins, not International (Navistar). I'm proud of mine.

Cummins engines in my industry are the K-mart brand of all the diesel power plants available. I run a company that works with a lot of VERY heavy machinery and with the exception of Liebher, the second most problem moters for my equipment are cummins. And The Liebherr problems are mostly parts availability issues. Caterpillar rocks and always will.

I think Cat should make a passenger vehicle motor.... Now that is something I would sell my LLY for. Until this happens, I will keep my Isuzu....

If CAT got into the game watch out!
Did Detroit Diesel build the 6.2 & 6.5L motor.
Then Roger Penske bought Detroit from GM, Then Sold it after a number of years.

Are we going to see a Mercedes Diesel in Dodges in years to come because of the merger of Daimler/Chrysler.

Look at Freightliner trucks, owned by Mercedes, in calif you can only get Mercedes motors in them, no more Cummins.

I remember reading a number of years back that GM owned 51% of Isuzu.

But things change in the auto business like I change my socks!

i think DD designed engines in late 70's GM sold DD around 83, AM General was created to keep AMC and this engine american owned and manufactured under gov't procurement laws at the time, Penske sold around 89 which now is owned by Daimler-Chrysler which is why just about all engines are MTU(mercedes) also own Freightliner. Gm had controlling interest in Isuzu in 70's Buick managed along with Opel which is why later opel's wound up being isuzu's. and under 80's GM policy GM engine is GM engine due to law suits in early 80's.

I had heard GM was going to use a CAT diesel engine but at the last minute decided to go sorta in-house with the Isuzu design.
