Can anybody tell me why alcohol is bad for IPs if it allows water to pass thru the fuel system? Don't a lot of good diesel additives do this also, only without alcohol? I know it is used as an injectable power booster, with water, but that is after the IP. A lot of SVO and WVO users talk about adding dry propanol to make sure that water doesn't sit in the tank. I also read about a lot of old timers adding a small amount to the tank to keep water build up to a minimum. I am NOT asking about adding a ton of alcohol to absorb gallons of water or an amount of water that should be physically drained from the tank. Really looking for some insight here guys:confused:

Methanol and ethonal (depending upon the recipe) is used in making bio-diesel. The alcohol attacks some the fuel system components over time. Some have posted that their return lines on their injectors turned to mush after a few months.

TDG I'm sure is gonna shed some light on "the rest of the story."

And methanol and ethanol aren't that good at mixing water into diesel. Propanol is better.

I am no chemist here my thoughts:

Alcohol is a solvent and cleans very well. It breaks film strenght of lubricants so it robs the lubricants ability to stick to metal and provide protection against "metal to metal contact".

I got a bad tank of diesel once and called PowerService to ask about diesel 911 (which has alcohol and water dispersants). They said water drier additives used in that product are bulky and dont' mix well with lubricant addititves. They said it was safe for IP if used in recommended doses. Interestingly, it was fairly strongly recommended not to overdose.
