I hope this is the right place to ask this, I was driving on the freeway the other day going about 50mph and all of a sudden my rpms were going up and I was slowing down. As I pushed on the go pedal a very bad noise came from under the truck. Pulled over to the side and shut it down and recomposed myself. Re-started the truck and engine sounded fine, put it into gear and it bucked and rocked foward, felt like it skipped 1st and went right to second gear. I figured at this point I was a victim of the NSBU, so call the tow truck. Got the call from the dealer today and He says both my Transfer case control module and Transfer case encoder motor are shot and need to be replaced. Please tell me , a guy who knows nothing of these things, if these two items would cause this issue, and about how much they are to fix. My truck is a 2001 ext. cab long bed, D-max, with @ 54,000 miles, and I have owned since 2002 and 16,000.
Thank you in advance for any and all help/imput.

if the transfercase was going into neutral or something to that effect its possible.
Hopefully they checked the fluid, we had one that would act like it was coming out of gear and set trans codes, ended up there was no fluid in the transfercase and it was jumping out of gear and doing all kinds of stupid stuff.

thanks for the reply Cobra, so you don't think it has anything to do with the NSBU switch, and they are just charging me a small fortune to redo this other stuff?

Without knowing if there were any codes and what they were its hard to say. Unfortunatly, you can have a few good guys at a dealer, and a few bad ones, its all luck of the draw on who you get, unless you get to know one and always request him to work on your truck. Only thing I would really worry about is poor diagnosis, thats the biggest problem in dealers.

Well they called and said it was ready, went to pick it up. They had it running when I arrived and when I got in the DIC was flashing the security light and service 4 wheel drive light. Tech brought out the code reader and said the computers seem to be on again off again losing communication. Truck would drive a little then limp it seemed. So the truck stays at the dealers another day. I am worried that these guys don't know what they are doing. I will try to get some codes that the truck is putting off.
