The flip-out ashtray in my 2005 GMC Sierra 3500 won't stay closed! Is this a common problem? Is there a quick fix other than glueing the thing shut?

mine did that also and they found that it was missing the little clip that keeps it up tight.

Just a FYI to help someone... I have an 80's 1/2 ton basic Chev, the ashtray never did close properly or stay shut and I've noticed MANY of these old trucks have ashtrays that either won't stay closed or come open when the truck hits a bump... I took a good look at mine and found a spot on either side of the dash in the ashtray hole that looked like they held bushings at one time that pressed against the body of the ashtray... so I "MacGivered" some old rubber bushings from my 'assorted' parts drawer (*they were actually rubber "feet" from an ooold computer) with some short screws and tightened them, the fit like they were OEM! Works fine now.. .

At least you get an ashtray. In the upscale trim levels they give you a plastic dixie cup and instructions on how to use a fire extinguisher.

Dang! I could've had a V8! Wait ... I do have a V8! But that's the engine ... not the drink.

What were we talking about?

Sure, you're right on that one, but who said I was talking about the key to the truck. I may have been talking about the keys to the boat, trailer, g-friends house, etc.....):h Just don't tell my wife Ok! :D

Mine pops down and my father's does the same thing. Both 05 trucks. I just tell people that my truck's "that fast". On a side note, i'm a smoker, but i don't use my ashtrays in my vehicles. But...on my 02 it was nice and convenient to get to. On this 05, i need to say "go go gadget arm" before i can get to it. And the angle it comes out at makes it real difficult to actually ash in while driving. What were they thinking? It should have slid out ya know?

My '03 does it, and my son-in-law's '05 is worse. What's the fix?

Yeah, what's that all about. That stupid little dixie cup does even fit anywhere correctly (at least not that I've found). I'm not a smoker (and no one else will be in my $49k truck ;) ), but I sure miss my "trash bin" for candybar and gum wrappers (there's a coin holder inside the console). I've considered modding to add the ash tray which is in the WT/SLE models (if it's possible ... haven't even got that far yet), but now I'm not so sure I want to do this if you guys are having trouble keeping it closed.

Is anyone aware of a "add the ash tray" mod?

-mikeSo where do you put your butts? I sure hope you aren't one of those littering, forest fire starting "BUTT FLICKERS" Shame, shame shame.....

My butts go out the window...

But back to the ash tray.... the little clip works its way loose, just open the lid and mash the clip down in the slot with your thumb nail. It fixes the looseness of the lid.

my butts go in the seats.):h

And yes, that's actually what my profession is....a forest fire starter. It pays well but has sh*tty benefits:D

At the risk of starting a don't smoke flame here.......
At the rate i smoke, i'd need a 5 gallon pail as an ashtray....the stocker just wouldn't suffice. Besides, butts make funky smells...both kinds;)

I'm so glad to see I'm part of a very active and lighthearted board!
:cool2: Just think of all those FORDs with the slider ashtrays that don't have to worry about that...

You guys don't like the "muffin" ashtray? (Yes, thats what GM calls them!)

Mine is great for pennies, since GM didn't leave a slot for them in the Console.

I dont even know where my original "muffin ashtray" went...but now that I have the Denali console, it gives me a "real" ashtray. Although I took out the ashtray and im working on glueing a little flat piece of black plastic in there...bingo! Instant covered accessory switch compartment!!

And im with RacinJason...anyone who thinks about smoking in my truck dies!:muahaha:
