When I was in college a friend of mine had installed a extra AC compressor under his hood for air. I am thinking he also had a tank to hold the air with some kind of pressure switch. Has anyone ever seen this or does anyone have any ideas on how to get started working on this project. There is a mounting spot just to the left of the AC compressor. I would need to find out what would go there, probably another ALT.

If your talking about a DMax, yes on the drivers side the blank spot is the second alternator on some. On mine it is the primary fuel filter.

If I understand you right you are talking about, air for tires etc. If you are there is a company called Kilby who manuf the compressors and all the brackets to bolt these units up. I dont know if they make a bracket kit for the dmax. If this is not waht you were talking about just tell me to shut up.

Once upon a time a long time ago, I built an air compressor using an AC compressor just like you are talking about. I used mine for a shop compressor and ran it with an electric motor but it was still an AC compressor. Mine used an old Chrysler compressor that had an oil sump in it. I just filled it up with 30W oil and it ran for years. I got the plans from Mother Earth News. Here is the link:

Hope it helps

Devil, you never have to say that. All information is great....I will look into it.

ag4gt, that looks just like the setup my friend had, thank you for the link.

Maybe this might help,no kit listed for Dmax but shouldnt be too hard to make the bracket.....shows all components on this site.

Thanks, I was sniffing around that site last night. I looks like the compressor would work. There is a shop near my house that I think would be able to make a mount for it. I am also thinking about doing the used AC compressor route.

Deerefred, I looked at the link you supplied, that is the SAME compressor I used 30 years ago for my shop compressor. Oh well, it still works I guess.

I made one for my Land Cruiser. I used a York twin piston, I thinkit's either 6 or 9 cubic inch, compressor. It was design for A/C, but worrks fine for tires and tools. I went through the catalog at a Pep Boys and picked out a clutch/pulley that would fit the belt I had. Total cost, 9 years ago, was $220.00 for all new components.

There you go thats what I was talking about. Making a bracket shouldn't be to hard. This is what we use on our jeeps to air up tires. These pumps work really good.

If you realy want air and have some money go with VMAC.
We use the VR-70 at work and it works great. It does take up some room but you have enough air to blow up a hot air balloon;) .

I am waiting for a used AC compressor off Ebay. That link looks like a great set-up. I was trying to find out how much they cost. Do you have any idea?

Are you sitting down. We paid about $6500 for the whole kit. Kit includes the compressor, oil tank, oil, brain box (the control harness), and hoses.
A little steep but lots of air for anything you need and you do not have to have an air tank if you don't want one, but if you have air bags you will need to have a tank because this only works when the E-brake is on.

I was able to get a GM compressor for our trucks on Ebay for $45 and I am getting ready to design a mount. I am trying to figure out how to keep the oil in the compressor. Does anyone have a idea on how to keep the oil in the AC compressor and out of the line and tank?

Thanks for taking the time to read.:)

I run one of these on my offroad rig for airing up tires etc. Other club members use them to run air tools, cfm output depends on the relative sizes of pulleys.

Pick up a wet sump style A/C compressor (York style), you will also need a pop-off valve for safety, a reserve tank to keep the compressor from cycling on and off, and finally a control valve from a standard electric shop compressor. I have pictures and diagrams that I can send you if you like.

Great site that details the installation for a jeep. The brackets would be different for our trucks, but the compressor info, and regulator information should be the same.

Now I need to figure out a oil injection and oil separator system. The GM compressor fits ok....I will need to figure out how mount it.

Who knows if this thing is going to worth it.
