my buddy bought a 03 6.0 this summer. the truck ran flawlessly without a problem. now he is having problems starting it in the winter. if he leaves it unplugged over night the truck has a hard time starting. the motor cranks fine, it just does no want to hold idle. last night we went to start it, and it turned fine but only random cylinders would fire and it would no hold idle. we tried a second time, this time more cylinders would fire and it only held idle for 10 seconds. with a last resort we try a third time. this time the truck held idle but it was very choppy. after letting it idle for 10 min it was good to go. btw it was only 10*F last night and he has all new filter

does any one have experience with the early 6.0 and hard starts in the cold, could this be signs of a oil pump going bad

The 6.0 really needs to be plugged in at temps that cold. I know you will read some that will say otherwise but knowing people that own them, they just say it is easier to plug them in rather than deal with these issues.

Check out www.powerstroke.org and I know you will find more information.

Have him switch to 5-40 rottela full syn it should help. it will flow better when cold through the hpop and be able to run the injecters better that way. The best thing to tell him is build a heated garage for when it gets below 50 degrees out or buy a duramax.

High dollar synthetic oil is best.

Rev-ex additive helps

There is a cold start reflash I think

Plug that bad boy in

Mine just runs a little louder than normal when it's really cold, but I never see single digits or anything. I run Valvoline Prem. synthetic oil, the best IMO.

I had an '03 6.0. Had it in Halifax, Nova Scotia over the winter (6 months), twice. Always kept it outside, but also was able to keep it plugged in. Never had an issue with it.

Problems didn't start till I got back to the US, and the truck hit 80k miles. Ford bent me over and I was all to happy to drive the new D-Max to the Ford lot to show them how happy they made me.

Hope your buddy had better luck than I did. It'll be a cold day in hell before I buy another Ford.

I would say trade her off for a DMAX! Much better cold starting than a powerjoke ha ha ha

I had a 2006 6.0 PSD. Mine NEVER start that hard in the winter. He most likely has bad injectors. also ask him if he as taken it to the dealer to get the latest comp flash, it helps a lot with cold starts
